They gave out fortune cookies. The "fortunes" were for $$$ off, ticket upgrades, 2-for-1 vouchers, and other graft.

I think it was more *unimaginative* than *offensive*, but what do I know?

Hell, half the stuff you get in a typical Chinese resturant was invented in America...

David Carradine is not Asian?!?! WTF!!!

You know...Bruce Lee was supposed to get that part. Luckily for the world, he didn't. Better to have his films than old and crappy TV footage.

NO OFFENSE TAKEN quoted from the miami herald

To promote Chinese center Yao Ming's first appearance in Miami, the Heat gave out 8,000 fortune cookies containing special offers or prizes inside. Yao pointed out why it wasn't the greatest promotional idea ever.

''First of all, there is no such thing as a fortune cookie in China,'' Yao said. ``Second, maybe fortune cookies are too small. I'd give out something a little bigger.'' (he actually recommended a pork

The last suggestion was a joke from the 7-5 center. In all seriousness, Yao said he wasn't insulted by the promotion because he's not necessarily familiar with American stereotypes of Chinese culture.

if he was familiar with american stereotypes, he would be pissed. ^_^ :D

and for everybody's future reference, i read somewhere that fortune cookies were invented in san francisco. and yes, pretty much all the food you find in a chinese take out restaurant is not authentic chinese food. authentic chinese food is not as oily or greasy or fattening. most authentic chinese food is healthy that's why it wouldn't sell in a fast food take out restaurant.

Also, most Asian food is vegetable based, with the meat being the accessory, which is one reason China has one of the lowest rates of heart disease in the world. The stuff you get in an American Chinese resturant is mostly meat, because the typical American diet is meat based

Is it also a reason why China doesn't have too many 7-footers?:D

    Easy,

Actually, its funny that you mentioned that. There was a tidbit I heard the other day on TV that China has something like 100 7-footers in their basketball system right now and some of them are only 15-16 years old.

I think the Heat did it to tease the Rockets, the same as when we play "its a small world after all" during Orlando introductions, etc. Nevertheless, I still think it was in bad taste.

    bronxfan,
I now feel dumber having read your post. Clutchcity.net needs an enema to cleanse it from anti-Rocket fans and dumb subjects.

The Miami Heat is a bad basketball team. You can add that they have an equally bad marketing and promotion dept. as well. I know this because they had the worst promotion of the year. It might be the worst of the past decade actually. When the Houston Rockets came to town, Heat officials gave away 8,000 'promotional' items.

    Fortune cookies.

    Yes, fortune cookies.

Hilarious. A Chinese man comes to town, and you give away fortune cookies? Why don't you just bring in Fuzzy Zoeller and have him hand out fried chicken and collard greens. It's about the same thing.

Yao Ming said he was not offended by the giveaway, but did comment that it didn't make any sense, considering that they don't have fortune cookies in China.

Well done Heat, you couldn't even get off a racial blast right. The team is 6-18, your coach is paranoid about the refs hating him and you top it off with this fortune cookie debacle.

Don't use a person's heritage, nationality, race or skin color as part of a promotion or joke. If you want to promote the guy, how about something urges people to come see the #1 pick in the NBA draft? That should be enticing enough.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Stereotypes are hilarious.

All he did was ask a simple question; no need to jump all over the guy because his thread was taken from "what was Jim Rome referring to" to "Most chinese food doesn't contain meat".

Where did you get this idea from? The fact is that if you dont eat pork for wahtever reason and you have to be in China, you are screwed big time.

I agree with Rome, but laugh at his seemingly inconsistent logic.
Is this not the same host who blasts 'rednecks' and 'euro's'? It seems consistency across the board is not his strongsuit.

Actually, the short Chinese stereotype was created by the fact that the great majority of Chinese immigrants were from the Southern provinces like Guandong and Fujian. A lot of Northern Chinese were tall, especially those from the Shandong province. I have a friend from that part of China where most of his villagers were 6 footers or above. He himself was 6-3 when he was 15 and his Dad was 6-8. The Chinese is a great mix of people over thousands of years.
