So for the past week I have had this bad gas-like smell in my apartment that I cannot locate the source. I am asking for opinions about what to do at this point.

    A few things:

    1. The apartment above mine does not have the problem. The guy let me come in and I couldn't detect the odor in his apartment.

    2. The apartment complex is all-electric, but I could swear this odor smells like fuel burning.

    3. Thinking that it might be in the walls, last night I shut off the breaker that controls all of the plugs that controls my computer, tv and lights in the bedroom. Next morning it seemed a little better, but the odor was still there. It seemed like when I took a shower the odor increased, but that might be because the odor is in my hair.

    4. I have a suspicion that it could be my computer but the odor doesn't really seem overtly strong inside the case, it is more just in the air like it is coming from the vents. But when I check the vents, I don't really smell it that strong there either.

    5. I've checked my appliances (water heater, washer/dryer, stove, refrigerator (I even checked my office chair (could fuel be coming from it). I don't know.

This is driving me insane. This happened once before, but it went away after a couple of days. This is going on for a week now and I half think that it is something in my walls or it is gas in my drains. Please help.

Who can we call to solve this?

    I'd double check the oven.

I'll look into it. Any suggestions as to what part to look at?

also could this be ozone I'm smelling? Could my computer be creating an ozone layer in my house?

Just re-read it, if your oven is electric then there shouldn't be a problem. If it's gas, just make sure there's no leak in the valve.

Also, ask about the water heater.

that's what I'm thinking; the water heater is the problem.

Natural gas and sewage gas is two different smells but since you don't have gas connections in the apartment I'd say it's a drain that is failing, maybe leak seal in toilet, kitchen sink, or shower/tub drain.

It's like it's everywhere in the apartment. I smell it stronger in the air than I do at the drain.

could it be odorless at the drain and seep into the air and start smelling then?

Sometimes I smell it strong in the water and othertimes I don't.

also, if I live in an apartment complex, if it were in the drain could I be the only resident affected by this?

The maintenance man says that he can't smell a thing. He came and put clorox down the drains and tried to seal up the vinyl. He also had a device to check the plugs for moisture and if they were wired correctly. Which they all were.

Needless to say I'm at my wits end. I also can't get the gas smell out of the apartment even with the windows open. It is constantly there.

can you tell me how I go about checking this? I went to the vent to see if I could smell anything, but the odor at the vent wasn't strong. I also tried to shut off the air condition altogether, but the damn smell is still there.

how would I do a check for this?

Sewer gas is my guess. I do smell an odor in my tub drain. I soaked a rag with a mixture of water and clorox and I covered it with a toilet plunger. But the odor is everywhere man, and this maintenance dude says he can't smell a thing. While, no lie, I'm feeling light-headed.
