Dr: About Croshere: he received most of his paycheck for his play in the playoffs. Also, note that he was on a talented team with many other valid scoring options... Cato wasn't. Also, note that Croshere rebounded more than Cato... while playing the 3 and the 4.

I was mistaken about some of Cato's playing time with Portlan. I suppose that I thought I remembered something, and didn't.

But Portland really only had Sabonis as a true 5, besides Cato. The fact taht Cato couldn't land more minutes than that, imo, is telling.

First of all, the salaries doesn't reflect the player's talents, not always anyway. If I put you logic into real life situation then Juwan Howard, Shawn Kemp are amongst the very best in this league nad much better than the guys like Steve, Odom , Vince etc. Also players talents are judged by the coaches, and some coaches can see which other's can't. In another words, some players might not get the minutes even though they have the talents to suceed in this league. Anyway, Portland was probably the most conservative team in the NBA. It tooks Wallace 2 1/2 years to make the starting line-up.
    Is Cato an all-star material?
No, but he has the tools to become one of the best defenders in the league. To win the championship, the defense has to be as solid as a rock. BTW, doesn't Mutombo get picked in the all-star game just for this defensive game? Maybe Cato can get selected, you never know. Who would have thought that Vince would turn out to be the next Michael Jordon?

    Good point DrNuegebauer.

What is everyone expecting of Cato? 20 pts. 10 reb. and 3 blocks per game.

Cato may or may not give you that but I guarantee you that he will improve on last season.

Career wise Cato looks like a guy who would score 13 pts, get 8 reb., and block 2 shots per game.

Base on last years performance he is only underachieving by 4 points, 2 rebounds, and less than one block.

He has 6 years to improve. The Rockets knew what they were getting. That's why they signed him.

    haven;
who's to say that if Cato had been in the playoffs then he wouldn't have exploded and looked magnificent? Regular seasonwise he and Croshere weren't too much different.

As for PPG - Cato DID shoot 53.6% from the field - so he only scored 8.7ppg - he wasn't really a scoring option, his job was to recieve the pass and stuff it home.
Croshere was a scoring option at the Pacers (that's what he's best at!!)

It'd be good to see Cato get more rebounds this year - also be nice to see him block more shots. But if he scores the exact same number of points this year I couldn't care less! We have PLENTY of other scorers on the team - Francis/Taylor/Mobley/Anderson/Williams - all those guys would be expected to score in double figures - Kelvin just has to rebound for them and play D and block shots [IMG]

There are plenty of team who would be more than willing to take Cato's contract if the Rockets took one of their exploded contracts off their hands.

Cato is not the worst case scenario in terms of contracts. He is at least average and his contract is too.

Dr: I hope Cato has a good year.... believe me, I *really* want him to succeed, and in the past I've defended him from people who have declared him worthless. I think his contract is a bit high, but not completely ridiculous (even though I can think of other players I'd rather have for that amount).

My biggest problem with Cato, is that his contract will make resigning Shandon and Mo tough. Not only does it subract money from the cap for us, but if Mo has a... let's say, 20 and 8 season, it's going to very difficult to explain to Mo why he doesn't deserve the Max after having an all-star caliber season, while ole Kelvin is getting 7m for at best adequate play.

I just don't think Cato is going to work out. We'll see by January [IMG].
