I take klonopin .5mg for panic attacks. Its affecting my performance in school so i dropped it down to .1mg and I'm experiencing more panic, mania, spasms, derealization than i ever have.

does anyone know how long this will last?

it helps me but i don't know if i should be taking this for the rest of my life because there is cognitive decline with the use of benzos.

i actually have a little bit of knowledge on this. you need to stay on course no matter what. you can't live your life depending on a freakin pill. life is more fulfilling without it. you'll be much much MUCH happier off of them. it takes 2 weeks or longer, but don't let that discourage you. 2 weeks ain't **** when you consider the rest of your life. do consult a doctor though.

Coming off a Benzo is easy -- you just need to get some valium.

Hey man, don't take it bad, he's riffing on the Depression thread and making fun of a fool over there.

I'm sorry you're going through something so awful -- I have heard it's brutal. And I hope you're doing it under a doctor's supervision. I would think a psychiatrist would be your best bet for advice on stepping off a benzo, certainly apt to be more helpful than a GP.

Stepping down from 0.5 to 0.1 seems a quick leap. As others have suggested you might try going slower. Or maybe temporarily replacing with a softer benzo like Ativan. A sort of a methadone-type method.

But what do I know. You might find some helpful resources in this klonopin withdrawal thread I just found on another site by googling. 8 pages of discussion so maybe you'll find helpful advice there as well as here:

I'm not religious but I am praying for you.

    Also:

If you're interested in tapering off more slowly, I would bet you could get a liquid form of the medication so that you can measure your doses in reliable increments which is more difficult to do when splitting pills.

I did the same when I was struggling with stepping off Lexapro and needing to go very slowly. That was also tough stuff but about 10 weeks later I'm 99% withdrawal symptom free.

Hoping you have an even speedier recovery.

Why go halfway? Get some Xanax and you can sleep through the whole thing.*

*Note: Do not get some Xanax.

ugh, sorry i didn't post the link

    http://www.bcnc.org.uk/water_titration_method.html

but this guy goes through it but as others have explained you can go the titration way or take something long acting such as diazepam to lessen the withdrawal effects as they would kick in later..

klonopin does have a long half life though , but it is about 10 times as strong per milligram.

Diazepam is Valium, isn't it? Because yes that is stronger and also more addictive. But, if it has a longer half life, I imagine it would be a smoother withdrawal. In SSRI withdrawal sometimes the patient is given Prozac to replace the original drug because Prozac has a much longer half life so the withdrawal is less noticeable and way more manageable.

I take at least 1.5 mg Klonopin daily, to calm me down generally but mostly to prevent really terrible shortness of breath, like I feel I can't get a breath down at all. I take 0.5 preventatively in the mornings which has helped a lot to reduce episodes; then I take 1mg per episode as soon as I feel it coming on because it is best to get it before it gets all the way there. On a regular day, I have to take the 1mg at least once but it used to be like three times (as high as 3.5mg daily) that. So far the drug works great for me, been on it two or three years, always solves the breathing issue quickly enough, no side effects, doesn't make me high or dopey or sleepy.

I'd still like to be off it though. I'd like to be off as many drugs as possible so I can see where I'm at because I take more drugs now than I did before I got sober.

If you went from .5 to .1, you went 80% of cold turkey. If you're really struggling with the withdrawal, I'd go slower. Just me but I'd do a week at .4, next at .3 and so on. Very easy to do with liquid form.

I've done both but not at the same time. That Big Sky would be very trippy on mushrooms judging from how trippy it is when you're just on beer. But psychedelics are the last drug I'd ever do again. My brain wouldn't tolerate them well anymore. I remember when I was a teenager kids used to say that it was totally true that if you did acid 8 times you were legally classified insane and I remember how we used to add up how many times we had each become legally insane and say "ho ho ho." But now I think those kids might have been right because I have gone insane a lot of times.

So thank you for the offer, it was generous of you, but I must graciously decline.

Yeah, moes was trolling this other poster but ended up leading SuperBeeKay around by the nose no matter how much parody he tried. Maybe not an ideal thread for that sideshow.

Are you looking at all sorts of hippy techniques to deal with panic and anxiety? No, I'm quite serious. Square breathing. Ashtanga yoga. And intense isometrics on major muscle groups. All these things lead to significant and fast nervous system changes that help out.
