Go to car toys or another car stereo shop and get them to install an FM modulator under your dash, then you can plug your mp3 player directly into a plug, turn your stereo to a predetermined channel (88.9) and like magic your mp3 player will be playing over your car stereo. Before I had mine installed I had a little FM transmitter like the iroc but it's performance was less than perfect. I've used the cassette player in a rental car and it works just fine also.

Mine was just over a hundred installed but I have a BMW and it takes a special antenna adapter so it may have cost a little more than normal.

The sound is excellent. Just as if you had put a cd into the stereo.

My brother has one of these that works with any stereo (with an FM tuner). My brother demonstrated on a home stereo, and I must say, it worked pretty damn well. Audio quality was on a teeny bit better than radio. The range was good, too. I think I might have to invest in one of these things.

Yes, like VS posted... you can get a an FM modulator for around $30! I see them at Fry's Electronics all the time. You can probably get them at any electronics place...

Right, thats an FM Transmitter. I had this one. The problem with the FM transmitter is you get interference and they tend to drift off frequency on occasion. If you go with the FM modulator it's hard wired into your antenna so in therory the music should be as clear as if you are playing a cd and there is no outside interference. I found my transmitter was tempremental and I spent so much time fiddling with it I was glad when I got the modulator and just plugged my ipod in and didn't mess with it. If he's planning on using the mp3 player everyday in the car, I'd recomend the modulator over the transmitter.

Gosh, I'm gonna go pick up one of those iRock things first thing tomorrow morning. I've been wanting to be able to listen to CDs or now my MP3 player, but I don't have a tape player, only a radio in my car (it's from 1976). A friend of mine suggested the FM Modulator thing, but I've never seen one. This rules, now I get to keep my vintage stereo :) WOOHOO!!

I don't remember the name brand... it may have been audio-vox or magnavox or something like that. I only saw the package once. I got the thing installed at car toys. It's the same thing they use for trunk cd changers when used with an in dash deck that doesn't control the changer. ie if you have a sony deck and a kenwood changer you may just have a remote for the changer and you tune to the predetermined station to listen to you changer. Any car stereo shop should be able to sell you one or install one.
