I didn't read the thread for once until I posted, but I would agree with this. In fact, I think the only people who would assume that people would turn gay if gay marriage were to be legalized might have some issues with their sexual identity . Sounds more like a person who thinks that way might secretly be gay and not willing to admit it or something. Not that there is anything wrong with that. No offense to whoever might have posted.
This has to do with being scientifically literate, nothing else. Of course you should support homosexual marriage. Why in the wide, wide world of sports wouldn't you? Are you also opposed to the thousands and thousands of people that are born with male AND female genitals, that conform naturally to a specific gender?
That was in response to this So stupid it makes my head hurt. Im quite sure my cousin chose to be gay so he could get his butt beat numerous times growing up in rural Kansas.
Oh my, that is one of the dumbest posts I have seen in a while (JumpMan's). I view sexuality preference as similar to food preference. Everyone in the world seems to LOVE desserts and creamy things... I hate them. Everyone puts cilantro on everything, I avoid it like the plague. Just because it's available and most people like it doesn't mean I'll suddenly start to like it. Sexuality preference is probably even more strict than that, but certainly not a choice. My dislike for cilantro and creamy things isn't really a choice -- I just hate their taste. In the same way, liking women isn't a choice for me, as liking men isn't a choice for a homosexual male.
God, I hope you are right. Id much rather think I missed the sarcasm than to think he was serious ......except I know for a fact there are lots of religious types that believe that.
It's genetic. There's a chemical in cilantro that only some people can taste. Those that can, hate cilantro (has that medicine/poison/metallic taste). Also: http://www.ihatecilantro.com/ After several years of eating Chipotle, however, I've actually built up a tolerance for cilantro. I'll avoid it if I can, but if it's in small quantities, I can now stand it. Related article.
Aren't you contradicting your earlier statement that "Allah" is just some name like "Fred"? If "Allah" is a compound word of "The" and 'God' doesn't that mean that "Allah" is a proper term for 'God'? Its like people who refer to Ohio State as "The Ohio State" designating that Ohio State University at Columbus is the most important Ohio State campus.
I disagree. We should all be allowed to decide what is moral for ourselves. The government should not have anymore say in what morals we value then what religion (if any) we follow. What if someone who is gay takes control of the government and outlaws straight marriage. I'm guessing you would change your stance at that point.
Not to say that poster is this way, but when I hear people talk like that I think they might be in the closet...
If you remove the words "moral" and "immoral" sure. It is not the job of government to even consider these questions. Justice? Okay. Equality? Yes, please. That is what this thread is about. Morality? NO.
Note to those that keep saying they don't care what other people do but they could never support it: This is all that is meant by support. Don't oppose. It is amazing to me to see people post "I don't care what others do" or "It's not my business" or "it's just my personal preference" and then vote "oppose" in the poll. What ATW posted above is all any supporter of equality for GLBT is asking. Your indifference instead of your opposition.
Question for those who want the gov to legislate morality on a religious basis. Some fundamentalist christians think any sex that isnt for procreation is immoral and some even feel the only acceptable position is missionary....would you be ok with that being the law?
Itzakdavid, could you take a moment away from your obviously well-learned biblical studies to reply to this one? And before you do (if you do) could I add something to CCorn's question? He asked, "What makes you dislike something a person is unable to control?" I would rephrase to ask, "What makes you oppose something a person is unable to control, what makes you oppose equality for that person, and what does your "personal preference" have with your position on gay marriage? Are you saying you would personally prefer they not marry? And that that's your argument for why you voted oppose? That you'd prefer it didn't happen? Because I would seriously prefer that the country weren't dominated by religious thinking, but I would never argue that there should be a law based upon my preference. And how selfish and solipsistic would I be if I let my "personal preference" play a role in the governance of other peoples' lives?
Also, to Izakdavid, since R2K reminded me I'd posted this, I would really love to hear your reply to this post I made maybe before you joined the thread. Please understand I am not baiting you or calling you out. You seem well educated in religious studies and I am genuinely interested in understanding your feelings on the matter. I am considerably less interested in the histories of various religions or religious scholarship than I am in the way religion plays a role in the legislation of morality, especially with regard to gay marriage since that is the point of the thread in the first place.
More people may "come out of the closet," but if you're gay, you're gay, there is no choosing to be gay...well usually. My mother insists that my uncle isn't really gay. She says he just always wanted the attention and growing up he did whatever it took to have people look/talk about him. I don't care either way. In fact, I didn't realize he was gay till I was like 15. I just thought he had the same roommate for a really long time lol. I kept using the word "gay" to describe things, then my bro says not to say that around my grandmother because it makes her upset. I said why, that's stupid. He said who do you think Steve is?! Ummm, Uncle C's friend? No that's his lover, he's gay...It really didn't change my perception about gays, but it certainly made me stop using the word "gay" to describe things, although I slip from time to time. I don't like in your face gays. But then again, I don't like in your face heteros. I just don't like PDA anyways, and people who dress ridiculous. Not saying all gays dress ridiculous, there are some people, both gay and straight, that dress ridiculous for the attention, and that annoys me. There have always been gay people, there will always be gay people. Why do we continue to ostracize them as if we are living in the Middle Ages. This is 2012 people, our dumbest citizens should have the education to see that people are people. Race, Gender, Sexual Preference don't matter. The only people you should hate are Mavericks and Spurs fans. Anyone who believes it is constitutionally right for gays to be denied "marriage" rights (whatever term you want to call it), is an absolute moron. This is not a religious matter. The constitutions is supposed to ignore faith in lue of justice. Churches shouldn't be forced to recognize or provide ceremonies, but then again most gays aren't Christian anyways so why would they seak approval of a church? BTW I obviously don't know for sure if that last statement is true, but I would assume that most gays wouldn't participate in a religion that dissaproves of them so blatantly.
That's a little bit of a disingenuous way to use the money changer issue, but otherwise that is an awesome post Batman. Also, the scripture about the rich is a little murky and misused when quoted. The money was never the issue it is always the heart. The problem Christ is getting at is that rich people too often make money their God.
