Watching the Lakers this season reminds me of the Rockets 94-95 disappointing regular season. The playoffs were great, but the regular season itself was above average at best. I remember a Rockets player said that he was shocked that the Rockets won the championship that year because they didn't play very well in the regular season. Even during the first round of the playoffs, the Rox barely avoided elimination by the Jazz in the final minute of game 5.

Like the Rox that year, if the Lakers can manage to get into the playoffs, then they can play great during playoff time and successfully defend the championship.

Let's start by saying... don't turn this into a Lakers thread. :)

The Rockets had the 10th best record (47-35) in the NBA, tied with the Bulls. That's not a good regular season for the defending champs.

if every rocket season ended in a championship, i don't care what happens in the regular season.

Well, not to say the '95 championships were a fluke but a seasoned playoff team, if intact, will remain... a seasoned playoff team. Despite how many people (and players too) say the regular is "meaningless" and that the season really starts with the playoffs, I totally disagree. The regular season is when EVERY TEAM GOES THROUGH PERMUTATIONS in roster changes (e.g. health problems, bad perf, benched players, etc), team chemistry, strategy shifts, and lastly, what I call 'statistical' performance.

On that last note, a one seed, should perform like a one seed. However, weird things can happen, call it luck, that sabotages one team in favor of another. I for one, could not have predicted the Rox' cakewalk against Orlando. Could u? There might also be a "momentum" angle that plays out in the playoffs. i.e. the Hot team will keep rolling. However, i'd like to think the NBA is above that (relative to NCAA ball). The NBA is so adaptable, and such a thinking man's game, that teams will find ways to counter you.

Again, not to take anything away from Houston's title that year, but it's not the norm when an inconsistent regular season team takes the prize come playoff time.

    :p :p :p

One important point is that the Rockets picked up Drexler before the trade deadline that year. If they hadn't done that, perhaps they wouldn't have one another title. Also, it took awhile to get things together with Drexler. Thankfully, they peaked at the right time.

    I wasn't.

After that Phoenix series the year before,I really believed in the Rockets.I was probably just too busy enjoying Hakeem and Clyde playing together again to be disappointed.
