I think to me, some "great" music should challenge the trained ear to understand the influence, recognize the originality, and determine if it is pretense masquerading as arrogance or genuine human expression being woven through a tapestry of intricate timing.

But I must remind you that nothing I have just said is a valid opinion for I am likely insane.

Why would you even care if a band is popular today? You can hear everything you ever imagined at the click of a mouse.

This is the most amazing time to be a music lover. Everything you want is out there. GO FIND IT, OLD MAN.

    The next Nirvana?

Auto-tuned Nirvana (this actually sounds really good)

    Foo Fighters, end thread.

They aren't sell outs, they're an active band who don't charge an arm and a leg for an awesome show and Dave Grohl is a Rock God.

I put the 'rock' on the blues rock label because it's a blues based interpretation of a lot of different rock sounds. When they talk about their process they readily admit to being derivative, listening to something they like and putting their own spin on it. I can and have before listed 20 blues artists that most people have never heard of that produce the same or better quality of blues and blues rock ( in the top 100 guitarist thread). But, none of those is consistently in the music news, winning grammys or selling $300 seats.

It's good music though; dude can shred, has a great blues voice, and they are authentic and unpretentious. I'm excited that some music with balls is making it's way against a backdrop of auto-tune and Lady Gaga.

So, yeah. Mainstream modern music, most of it, sucks. I've hardly listened to the radio for years now because of it. There's a lot of great music out there though that doesn't get enough attention. Sometimes I don't find it until a few years later though. Maybe I'm not hip anymore. I'm not, actually.

Rock and roll lived briefly as Love Battery, and died resoundingly when Love Battery did.
