I am not so sure that Mo will be staying.

I personally think that he is looking for a team that will SHOWCASE him this year.

If he gets a better offer after this season, he will bolt. I don't think he is a man of character, based on his past.

He just wants to excel for a year, and get paid.

PS. I would LOVE to be wrong about this.

    thacabbage,

Why were Falk & Taylor under the impression that Mo would get a gigantic contract this off season when the trade scenarios during the 1999-2000 season did not show evidence of strong demand for Taylor?

There was always the threat of him bolting as a FA this summer, so it did knock off some of his trade value. Even after allowing for that, there was evidence that the market was weaker than they thought for Mo's services. How could they make such a huge miscalculation?

Freak: I think you're missing my point. For a moment, let's step aside from what Falk and the Rockets may have agreed to. Look at it this way.

If Mo Taylor emerges, do you want to keep him after this season?

I'm pretty sure you would want to considering all the factors (age, ability, not much chance at Webber/Finley). We won't have enough under the cap to retain him if we bring on another multi-year salary (without dropping Walt/other). If Mo breaks out this season like many of you all expect (19ppg and 8bpg), that gives you only 3 premiere free agents in Webber, Finley, and Taylor. Finley will not leave Dallas, so that sets you back down to only Webber and Taylor. If I'm not mistaken, Detroit is one of the teams who will be looking to break the bank next offseason, and they helped themselves by shedding Laettner's salary. Webber wants to go to a contender, so that cancels Detroit off his list. So who does Detroit then focus on? None other than the hometown hero, Mo Taylor. And believe me, Taylor would take the max in Detroit rather than stay in Houston for $5-$6million (if we use the trade exception). Now if we let it expire and have enough to pay him near the max, we have a completely different situation.

Mango: Thanks for posting that. You're right, that crop is very weak. I'd like to have Otis back, but I'm sure the exception would be better spent on a draft pick.

We are really going to find out what kind of man Mo' Taylor is this season. Not from his level of play, but his desire to win. Detroit is going nowhere fast except straight to the lottery for years to come. It will be like playing with the Clippers all over again. Hometown or not, I don't see Mo' being interested in finishing his career in a setting like that. His best option to have a successful career and legitimate shot at an NBA title is here in Houston.

I'm not saying the Rockets should low ball him, but anything short of 20ppg and 8rpg should not warrant him receiving a max contract. Unfortunately our current salary situation with Cato isn't going to help at the negotiating table. Falk surely knows what kind of deal Cato has. Mo' is a much better player at this stage and deserves a better deal than Cato. Falk will use that fact to his advantage.

    DaDakota,

I hope you're not implying that because you take the best deal available you don't have character.

Could Charlotte use Drew? If so, why don't we trade Drew for Thorpe straight up if possible? OT would give us some serious meat up front & veteran experience. The trade would fill a need for us & not use much if any extra cap space.
