Without an extension? Not interested. Same scenario, but I don't look at this like I do Dwight. Bigs win in this league, not little guys. Dwight + filler is still a perennial playoff team. Deron, as he's demonstrated, will get you nowhere on his own. Dwight instantly makes us relevant and brings tons of attention to the city. Deron's star power is far less. Dwight, post trade, would arm us for an immediate run in the postseason. Even if Lowry is part of the deal. Swapping Lowry and others upgrades a position of strength at the cost of other positions and overall isn't going to make us that much better for the rental period. Deron's also very clearly got his eyes set on Dallas. There's some gamble in getting Dwight to stay, but I don't think there's a fraction of that chance with Deron. It's risk with no reward. Pass.
Keep in mind they traded Favors (2nd overall pick), Enes Kanter, Devin Harris, another future and some more to get him. I doubt they just get rid of him just to get rid of him at this point.
Don't believe for a minute that Deron will leave Houston to sign with a depleted Dallas team with the only player of value being a 35 year old Dirk. And walk away from $28 million. While a player like Dwight could walk away from $28 million because he will get another max contract, and make it up, a PG whose career could quickly be cut short by injury, or loss of athleticism, would not do the same. Deron is not as good of a player as Dwight. His next contract will probably be his last max deal, so he needs to get five years on it, not four. Plus, our collection of assets, even post trade, will be better than that of Dallas, post-gutting. So he has a better chance of winning here. why is everyone saying Martin?? did u not watch the Nets game last week. Brooks is gonna be a very solid scoring guard for a while. The only thing that makes sense to me would be a Lowry + scola based deal bc of their contracts. remember just over a year ago the nets were about to offer a 12 mil a year contract for scola. now that was when they assumed they would have dwight to back up his defensive flaws, but still. Throw in Knicks pick + Morris/Bud their choice + any '09s if they want someone like Thabeet bc they need C's right now. we would prolly have to bite a contract like petro or stevenson along the way, but u do what u have to do to get a superstar. Trade: Lowry + Scola + knicks pick + Morris + Thabeet Receive: Williams + Stevenson even if its a rental and it doesnt work out, we will then be clear of every big contract on the roster (assuming Martin is gone in a dif deal), so we will at least be out of NBA purgatory, and begin to rebuild. It would b tough to start over without lowry and his amazing contract, but its a something that is probably worth the risk
Well, of course you don't trade for him if he won't sign an extension... but I think he might agree to sign one. Getting back to Texas and on a playoff contender might be a good enough situation for him to say "Okay, I can't pass up that much money, you have a deal".
Or maybe we can just wait until this summer and sign DWill as a free agent, without giving up any assets. Then we can trade Lowry and Scola to Atlanta for Josh Smith, and be first in line for next year's Dwight sweepstakes.
Trading for him gives us an advantage in FA that we wouldn't have otherwise. We could offer him more money than other teams and that'd likely be the difference between being able to lock him down or not. Suddenly, we've got DWill locked down on a multi-year contract and now other big name FAs wanna come down here and play with him. If we didn't have that financial advantage, he'd likely prefer Dallas over us. Ew.
If Williams doesn't take his POpt for 2012-13, Travis Outlaw at $4M becomes the highest salary of the Nets' $21M committed for that season. Personally don't see why the Nets would eat into that $34M cap bonanza with what the Rockets' would/could offer.
Outlaw doesn’t count against their cap since he was amnestied...Lowry is one of the best non-rookie deals in the league. If DWill is walking, getting at least Lowry as compensation is a no-brainer. D12 and DWill were the only class of 2012 superstar free agents out there anyway. NJ would still have plenty of cap space to try and go after someone like Gerald Wallace or try (probably unsuccessfully) to pry away RFA’s like Gordon or Batum.
That would be the only way I would be interested in acquiring him - as an expiring contract or trade asset. Giving a point guard max money is suicide.
The Nets would take expirings and a young player or two and a pick or two for DWill if they knew he was going to walk. They might take Lowry plus expiring plus pick if they knew he was going to walk. In my mind, the most likely scenario pairing DWill and Dwight involves one of them getting traded and the other one signing as a free agent. Because neither guy wants to play with just them two and no more and they both realize that a team is going to pretty much have to guy themselves to trade for one of them therefore the other one won't be able to be traded for. Dwight is trying to make this move to NJ and let Deron sign the super max deal because Dwight is going to make it up with his Adidas deal. However, DWill has already indicated he is fine with moving to Texas and signing for the regular non-Birds rights max deal. Bottom line: 1. Dwight wants to play with DWill or CP3 because of their ages and the fact that they are PGs. 2. They both want a major market and a team that can build out in short order to compete for a championship.
