    I know!

Send a "rations and supplies" plane to a 3rd world country of your choice and have it drop boxes down without landing. Mark the boxes "food". Then, instead of having any food in there, just have a print-out of this story in the boxes.

Until NASA cuts a Neptune rover program or WTI drops below $85 a barrell, then it's Sunday paper sales and panhandling off of Red Bluff.

Southern live oak trees are incredible and should be saved whenever possible. I love those things, the wood is incredibly hard. It was used to build the USS Constitution and if you feel like ruining your chain saw or log splitter, try it on a live oak log.

    I'm sorry but what?
    Its a tree.

I'd be angry as hell to know my tax money would be going to a tree.

200k is like a drop in the bucket with all pork barrel spending considered..
which is also a drop in the bucket of our deficit

    so save the tree!

I know it's a ton of money, and there are better things we could spend it on - I just have a soft spot for cool old things.

Hey I'm from League City. We should do this more often and claim it's a jobs program, so that way when anyone complains we can have the SPLC attack 'em.

Ok, let's get some facts straight
    - It's a Compton Oak, not a Live Oak. Very rare in North America.
    - It was planted by one of the founding families of League City (Ghirardi). A member of that family donated the land the tree will be planted.
    - The funds are coming out of developer's fees earmarked for parks. A park will be built around the tree, promoting conservation.

It's a beautiful tree. I've lived in League City for 22 years, and I'm all for moving this tree.

I guess that's better than nothing. Do you remember the talk of a Kemah Boardwalk-type attraction somewhere in LC? I seem to remember hearing that a few years back. And how is this being paid for? I've only heard that the City Council approved to pay nearly $200,000 for it. But, I haven't been following this too closely.

League City needs something. I used to always go to the car shows on Friday night at the park. Some good pick-up basketball games there.

    EDIT

    Congrats on the 12,000th post!

I think you mean the River Market Project, dormant since 2004:

We drove by when they dug up that tree and hundreds of people came out and watched. Apparently a lot of people care about that tree.

People are complaining about the cost, but can you imagine what the value of that tree is? At auction I would put a reserve value of 2.5 million and I wouldn't rule out a bidding frenzy that would push the price well over 10 million.
