That's what he said when he got hired, but they're obviously not running it. The players want to run it but McHale wants to do his own thing which is nothing.

Id say he's done a pretty good job of teaching some of their old sets. They dont run the Adelman corner sets anymore because they dont have a good passing big like Chuck or Brad.

You know who is one the best passing bigs in the league from the high post????.... guess who... Pau Gasol

Too perimeter oriented. The guards don't feed the post.

Great post, what I was looking for.

Though I never had the chance to watch those Celtics play in the 80's. But obviously it worked better for them because of their star studded squad.

I think they should still run that corner offense, Scola can still pass =(

Mchale is talking about how we were trying to drain the clock instead of just playing ball. Well that happened for basically the last 4 minutes. Why don't you say something then or run a damn set? Oh wait..we did..it was a terrible play designed for Lee to take a running prayer.

He's a young player. A mid-season mini slump is expected. He'll get it going again at some point.

The O does look horrid sometimes. I do agree it would look a lot better with a Pau Gasol inside. We need another player or two that can create offense.

How many practices have the Rockets actually had to put in an offense? I'd assume that for the most point they haven't had enough reps to put in anything that requires precise timing. You can see it in how ineffective the Rockets are at setting picks; players simply haven't had it drilled into them so they can run it when the defense picks up its intensity.

As to the technical Xs and Os, the main reason why there is so much pick and roll is that Houston has absolutely no one 1-15 on the roster who can establish post position. Pretty much every time they tried to isolate Scola on the low block, he couldn't even get the ball. If you can't call post ups, all you can really do is clear out and run 1-4 gut screens.

The Rockets also run some interesting dribble-drive weave stuff on the perimeter that seems to be tailor-made for Kevin Martin's abilities to shoot awkward runners, along with his ability to draw fouls on defenders which he has a step on. I think Parsons and Chase are also quite good decision makers when they are going East-West in terms of whether to elevate or kick out. Unfortunately, Lee/Dragic/Lowry are way more effective when going in straight lines to the basket, something that is made much more effective with a true offensive big man that can roll to the bucket rather than fade, for example, Nene, or a good passing low post threat like Gasol who can feed cutters.

I was not a McHale guy before his hiring, and I was definitely pulling out my hair at tonight's decisions, until I realized that Doc Rivers' Celtics are just as prone to clogged toilet offense, and their players have played about 400 extra games together than these Rockets. Certainly if the non-creativity remains with a more talented roster next year with a full training camp, I'll be right with you with torch and pitchfork, but I just don't think anything that comes out of this season is truly indicative of future performance.

yeah, the problem is our players' limitations. Scola can't beat his defenders consistently and Lowry's shot efficiency has gone down. well, teams have learned to double him late.

coaches have to be very creative and more willing to take risks by trying more mix-and-matching of the players. could we have gone with more Parsons or more Martin during the endgame? or let Dragic run the set? your guess is as good as mine. McHale has to do the judgment call.

Basically, we are in a mid-season slump that is usually endured with the help of a super star.
