Does anyone know why assists are referred to as "Dimes"?

I don't see how a dime (10) has anything to do with a "dish"?

Great, yes. Funny, yes! But -- what is the blasted answer to 'dime'?

I don't know where it came from but doesn't it sound cool?

I hate the use of that word. It makes no sense and ESPN is so cool they never use the words 'assist' or 'dish'. If anything, dime should refer to a sweet baseline move, like Hakeem's dreamshake, where he could pivot and turn on a dime.

    That's awesome!
I wish they used more players, though. Vlade makes a better flop than Reggie.

That one with Reggie raining in the 3's is my favorite.

I would have chalked it up to something like doling out 1 dollar bills to strippers, but in a really really cheap strip joint.

    ...drops a dime...

i always thought it came from law enforcement. you know, how when some guy is going to rat out one of this friends to five oh? you know, he makes a phone call to the police about his friend. the phone call is a dime (well, 50 freakin' cents here in san antonio, but that's besides the point).

    ...drops a dime...

    Good question. How about this:

Why is a long shot "from downtown"? Wouldn't it make more sense to say that it's from the suburb?

Also, why is it "low" when closer to the basket (where most of the tall guys play) and "high" farther away from the hoop (where most of the short guys are)?
