Poll will be up soon... I personally think we're going to get our star player and contending status through the draft when we eventually realize that running the middle of the pack for a first round exit every year is not helping us... I guess you could pick more than one if you think it'll be a combination of some of those options or you think chances are about equal. The optimum situation would be to get a early bloomer in the draft and help draw free agents to the city by having them want to play with a young star.
Draft a Kevin Durant type of player who will remain loyal to the team, then use that superstar as an incentive for others to come. That or move to New York or LA. If the new generation of players is like the current one, that's our only option.
Les, McHale... it doesn't feel like the Rockets will just "sell off" anytime soon. The draft sure would be nice, but I'm guessing the Rockets will continue to fight, fight, fight and hope to make incremental upgrades until some superstar takes a second look at them.
Its tough to say. Our flexibility is dwindling. I say the only way that is looking like it could happen is through same major trade that changes this franchise. There seems to be no value in that draft pick now. Most of you admit top free agents wont come here over other glamorous places. There seems no other way but to trade for the ability to become a great team. At this moment with what has happened lately thats what it looks like.
Its obvious the whole "build a bunch of roles players in Houston and hope a superstar comes over here" didn't work. You would think that seeing all the talent that a potential star could have surrounding him here would translate into something... Our only real hope is to get some media hype. We need to do something spectacular and to do that we need spectacular players. This is assuming that McHale/Les never consider tanking.
Well you can say goodbye to any hopes of drafting in the lottery with the NYK pick. No chance of landing a star this year or I would imagine in the future either given our current direction. We are not going to draft a star anytime soon. Just isn't happening.
That is considering we can even get Eric Gordon. Also big men are always weak in drafts which would mean we'd have to package more than just Martin for a top 5 pick and hope the big man there isn't a complete failure.
That sounds like a good plan. Teams seem to draft big guys to develop them into valuable centers who everyone will overpay for or we get to keep.
The team is essentially the same team as last year. They were built to complement Yao, who was in uniform last year. Saying "Its obvious the whole "build a bunch of roles players in Houston and hope a superstar comes over here" didn't work." is just not realistic. The Rockets never thought this way. They were building a contender around Yao and his window. So because Yao retired this summer, the rest of the team was all of a sudden assembled in hopes of a superstar coming, which then subsequently failed? That isn't how it happened at all.
I think we should draft tall players. Nothing but tall centers and Power forwards. Develop them. Then do some major trades to get the star or better players.
Just from a comedy appreciation standpoint, it would be too fantastic for the Rockets to stick it to the NBA/Hornets by stealing away the prize of the Chris Paul trade. Too bad restricted free agency kills the punchline.
Yes. I'm pretty sure Daryl had a backup plan in case Yao's foot injury would eventually end his career (which it did this past season). Why else do you think he's stocking up on young talent now? To find a diamond in the rough to draw superstars here.
I think your argument is inherently flawed considering: A) This team was built around Yao, and this is the first year we have actively moved away from this approach. B) We had a blockbuster trade vetoed, which would have resulted in a completely different team than the one playing in red right now. you are just beating a dead horse man...
I honestly don't think Pau Gasol is good enough to carry this team. Especially since it would have cost us both Scola and Martin. Not to mention Pau is getting old. That trade would have been a win-now move and I don't see us winning with the team we would have ended up having.
Low-risk that serves two purposes. To find a diamond in the rough, or just use them as expirings for free agency. You can't say that he didn't secretly wish one of them would blossom right?
that's nice and all, but doesn't really address my earlier point. ah here we are... we made a move. there was lots of media hype. it got vetoed. your first statement is fabricated. your second statement is a contradiction...
