And I have the movie Head sitting on my coffee table at home from Netflix. I have never seen it before. I guess I will tonight. Weird.
Monkees were formed in 1966. Beatles had 11 #1 hits in 64 and 65 (ie before the Monkees were ever formed). Other records before the Monkees were ever formed: Most songs inside the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time (14 songs on April 11, 1964). Most songs inside the Billboard Top 40 at the same time (7 songs on April 11 and 25, 1964). Most songs in the Billboard Top 10 at the same time (5 songs on April 4, 1964). Most songs in the Billboard Top 5 at the same time (5 songs on April 4, 1964). Most chart entries in the Billboard Hot 100 within a calendar year (30 charted songs in 1964) The only group to replace themselves at no. 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 twice (March 21 and April 4, 1964). It would be forty years later when Usher would tie the record. Most complete ever domination of the Billboard Hot 100 singles and albums chart by occupying the first 5 positions in the Hot 100 as well as the first two in the albums chart simultaneously (April 4, 1964). The Beatler were THE BEATLES and would have been THE BEATLES if the Monkees never existed.
Mike Nesmith wrote numerous songs, Peter Tork played 8 different instruments, and the other 3 all played instruments- Davy Jones was actually better on the drums than Dolenz, but he was too short for camera purposes so they put Mickey behind the skins and taught him how to play. They were such an underrated and misunderstood group- not only did the Monkees record some of the great songs in rock history, but Mike Nesmith conceived Pop Tunes on Nickelodeon which was sold to Viacom and turned into MTV. So, basically, Mike Nesmith more or less invented MTV. Also, among other groups, the Sex Pistols (Stepping Stone) and Run DMC (Mary, Mary) covered prominent Monkees tunes out of their like and respect of them. And Jimi Hendrix, although he left their tour early for other reasons, had nothing but compliments regarding their music and musicianship (Yes, Jimi Hendrix and the Monkees had jam sessions together). Now, if the godfathers of punk and rap (Sex Pistols and Run DMC), as well as Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles (John and George in particular lamented that they were misrepresented by the press) praise you, isn't that enough to establish your credibility????? The Monkees absolutely deserve to be in the Hall, and RIP again to Davy Jones.
Plus, David Bowie's real name is David Jones, but he changed it to Bowie so as not to confuse him with the already-established Jones. So, Davy Jones indirectly influenced history that way, as well.
Hey, I think the guy was kidding- really, there's no need for that. Obviously, the Monkees concept was developed by Bob Rafaelson as a response to the Hard Day's Night, and in one episode that showed the Monkees in concert, Mike Nesmith said at the end of a radio interview, "And we salute the Beatles, without whom all this wouldn't have happened."
Other supporters of the Monkees: Frank Zappa- very good friends with Mike Nesmith and appeared in the Monkees' movie Head. Stephen Stills- roommate with Peter Tork; he's the one who recommended Peter Tork after he himself(Stephen) auditioned for the Monkees and failed because his teeth were crooked. If not for that, Stephen Stills would have been the 4th Monkee. Paul Westerburg (The Replacements)- huge fan- regularly does Monkees covers in concert, especially "Daydream Believer." Jack Nicholson- appeared in Head and co-wrote a song for them (and sort of co-directed them). Yes, that Jack Nicholson: "Head is a 1968 psychedelic comedy-adventure major motion picture, starring TV group The Monkees (in credit order: Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith), and distributed by Columbia Pictures. It was written and produced by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson, and directed by Rafelson."
Yes.......I'd like to disassociate myself from anyone who didn't think his tongue was planted firmly in cheek.
RIP Monkeys is the craziest people. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZPQpsipHKU8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Too bad you won't be experiencing it the way it was intended. RIP Davy This has been in my study for years. A studio release poster of Head.
Lots of famous and successful performers don't write their own material. It's very common in Country music and in Pop. Big deal.
