Cat, you seem to be putting a lot of faith on those reports of Baker being in shape.

I agree that Baker in his PRIME was one heckuva player and surely better that Grant, (at least offensively) but i´m not believing he can be that player again until i see it.

Until then, the Rastaman is going to whip baker´s ass badly, IHMO [IMG]

The more I look at this trade, the more I think it's a poor trade for *everyone* involved.

Seattle gets an aging center who won't put them over the top, who they have to pay for two more years.

New York will have absolutely no center and will be *torn up* by Miami. They have 3 scorers who will demand to start (only two positions).

Yes, I' say NYC got the better deal here, although I'm not sure they're *that* well off. My guess is that Rice could average 20ppg given the minutes and shots. Someone is going to be traded... but for *who*. The Knicks will need a center, and will have some decent trade bait... but *everyone* needs a center.

Still, to me, NY got the better deal, because they received younger talent.

BTW, everyone saying Seattle got a good deal... do you *really* think Ewing will play that many games next year? His body is falling apart.

Don't forget our "friends" the Lakers are getting Christian Laettner out of the deal. He may very well be the piece they need to help keep them in the drivers seat for years to come. He's a smart, team player and unfortunately exactly what they need.

Laettner and team player don't belong in the same sentence. I think this does not help the Lakers at all. The Lakers did not need an offensive minded guy like Laettner with a bad attitude. They needed an enforcer who could rebound and defend. Laettner does neither of those. Remember how so many of you hated Mo Taylor because of his rebounding? Mo averaged 6.5. Laettner averaged 6.7. As far as I'm concerned, the Lakers are even more vulnerable than before. Now, they traded away all of their outside shooting almost. And they did get a PF, but one that is primarily offensive minded, which is not at all what they need. They need a Charles Oakley type enforcer who will defend and be a monster on the glass. No one is further from that than Christian Laettner.

As for the comments on the Knicks, Camby is working out this summer very hard and is bulking up. I do suspect they will try and trade for a center, but if not Camby is very serviceable. He has played center before and will again. Personally I feel the Knicks will definitely beat Miami AGAIN, but that remains to be seen.

I was rolling in the car on the way home!!

The driver had the sports radio station on and they were repeating the interview they had earlier with Brandon Malone, the Knick assistant coach.

The interviewer asked him whos gonna play center. Coach said "Vin can play center. We are pretty sure that he can handle it if we need him there."

I died laughing at the thought of Alonzo mistreating Baker so bad in any matchups this year. What the Knicks are thinking now leaves me scratching my head.

I guess they are lucky the deal looks like its dead. But I found that to be way, way funny.

"Huge 4 Team Trade In the Works NBAtalk has learned from
an NBA league source that a four-team trade is about to go down. And
the New York Knicks could be in for a MAJOR upgrade. The deal
would have the Knicks getting BOTH Vin Baker and Glen Rice in a
sign-and-trade with the Lakers. The Knicks would send Patrick
Ewing to the Sonics and David Wingate to the Detroit Pistons. The
Sonics would also receive a promise from David Falk to get Maurice
Taylor. The Pistons would send Christian Laetnner to the Lakers
and then basically self-destruct. Detroit would get: Vernon Maxwell,
Lazaro Borrell, Greg Foster, Vladimir Stepania, John Celestand,
Tyronne Lue, David Wingate and a number one pick from LA and
NY. According to the league source, this deal is done and awaiting
    approval at the league office."

Unfortunately, bskball.com has a misprint. On its title it says "Seattle Says No." The article, however, says "Phoenix Says No." It doesn't look good.

That one from bskball.com, "settle Says No" Is not a misprint, it is from yesterday, the 20th. Today, the 21st, they have the correct info about Phoenix not wanting Ewing. Bskball.com doesnt update regularly though, occasionally he will when there is breaking news, so dont expect to find any ewing info from this afternoon on there until tomorrow or later tonight at the earliest.

NBATalk is somewhat refutable and I would beleive that a deal is being discussed or awaiting league approval. I dont beleieve they have the exact details of the deal correct, simply due to the number of players involved here, and the large amount of players going to Detroit seems kinda weird.
But if youre still hoping for Mo to land here I would say that those hopes are very very very slim right now.

    Well see.

About midseason which team will look better heading to the 8th spot (I personally prefer the 5th spot or better, but I'm working w/ cynics):

    Sea:
    C - Patrick Ewing (inj = old)
PF - Mo Taylor (inj = Gary Payton threw a brick at him for not rebounding)
    SF - Rashard Lewis
    SG - Barry
    PG - Payton

    Hou:
    C - Cato
    PF - Kenny
    SF - W. Williams
    SG - S. Anderson
    PG - Francis

Gee, that's the same chemistry laden lineup from last year... and the bench is as strong as ever.

According to the front page of CC.net via some Seattle paper, it appears to be a valid story.

Can anybody see this deal going down? I can think of numerous reasons why this probably won't happen, but Taylor has another self-improsed deadline (reportedly) so I'll just wait and see. We should know by tomorrow. All together class:

    "Yeah, right."

First Rashard and now Mo! Just when I was starting to hate Seattle a little less, they pull all this crap. Why the hell would anyone want to play in that ugly ass city. I dont know what the hell they are thinking acquiring Ewing. And if you think Vin Baker had depression problems in Seattle? Wait till that fool has to deal with the NY media. Baker will end up best pals with our resident Virgin Suicide.

Okay so Im only kidding about Seattle being ugly. But damnit I hate em anyways.

I agree, the Lakers would have been getting a steal. Laettner isn't great, but he's a vast improvment over everything else they had.

I got this info from an interview I heard on the radio with the editor of the Tacoma News.

No matter what happens, Ewing will get traded to Seattle and then sign a two year deal. If other teams can't be involved, they will do the trade straight up. Vin Baker does not get along with Payton ON the court. Off the court, they are fine. There was one time when during practice, Payton trashed talked Vin to death and Vin got offended. All of a sudden, Vin started to drag up and down the floor and Payton called him a "punk ass all-star wannabe". Guess what Vin did? He left practice and went to the locker room and broke down CRYING!!! LOL!!! I couldn't believe what I heard. Many of us know that Vin suffered through depression and had free-throw problems. There is speculation that it all stems from the abuse Vin took when the Lakers swept them a few years back. He did nothing in the series and really got hammered for it. He asked the league for help in dealing with his depression but then refused it and said that he will take care of it himself.

Alot of fans here think that Vin is mentally soft. I happen to agree. But, they have to get rid of him because Seattle has lost patience with his promises of getting back to the player they originally traded for.

Also, Vernon Maxwell has to be included in ANY trade the make. Supposedly, Vernon went to Westpaul and said to play him more. Westpaul said that if he plays well, then he stays on the floor. If he doesn't, Shammond Williams gets the minutes. Vernon said that he doesn't like that deal and to keep him off the playoff roster. Add to that that Payton and him got into a fight and you see why they call him Mad Max.

Finally, we all know Falk is in all this. Once the trade is made, Taylor will sign for the exception and get his money next year. Seattle thinks they will have a pretty good team with what they are going to put on the floor.

As for the Knicks, I am hearing alot that Ewing was offered to the Blazers in a sign and trade for Brian Grant and Bonzi Wells. No word on why that didn't go through. The Suns were mentioned in trade talk for Kidd. If yesterdays deal went through, there is speculation that the Knicks would then try and deal Rice, Houston or Rice, Spree to Philly for Iverson. Of course, there is the Webber deal also since he just doesn't shut up about wanting to play with Spree in NYC next year. Also, Ewing has the Wizards on his list of teams that he would accept a trade for. That is pissing alot of fans here off because its obvious that he is just about the money and not winning...like he always says over and over and over again. They can't wait to get this guy out of here.

Well, it was a sign-and-trade, so it would take Grant wanting to play for the Knicks. Not sure if that was the case. He seemed very particular on the type of teams he would consider.

I could actually have seen that trade as a win-win, if it was just Grant-Ewing (no Bonzi). Grant is a more consistant PF than Baker, and to be honest offers more than even Baker/Rice together, considering age. Portland (unlike Seattle) is a "player away" and could really use a big man to combat O'Neal in the playoffs, even if it is a 1-shot deal. The only down side to that is that Portland is so far over the cap that they would get no cap relief from releasing Patrick after 1 year.

NY´s media is going to shatter Baker´s fragile id and superego beyond repair.

    Mark my words.

Before they are through with him, Baker will barely be able to babble a few words. [IMG]

Too bad the Lakers are out of the Ewing deal. I guess now our only chance to see Laettner co-starring with Shaq is in a bad late-night prison movie.

The Lakers don't need a big defender. They already have Shaq for that and to gobble up the boards. Adding Laettner will make it very difficult for teams to defend the low block because he has a good mid-range jumper and would benefit from the triangle offense. Teams wouldn't be able to double Shaq near as much with the threat of Laettner hovering from 12-18ft. Who cares if he only gets 6-7 boards a game??! You add that to Shaq's 12rpg and you have one hell of a force in the paint.

I do agree that trading their outside threats may hurt them some, but very little. If they add Laettner you can look for their scoring to go up next year despite losing their 3 point threat.
