Livan will probably be our designated inning's eater, so Myer's role for that was not needed anymore.

I agree with you that the absolute best case scenario would have been for both Myers and Lyon to rebound and create some trade value before the deadline this year. However, at this point, I see Lyon as a sunk cost. I think his arm injuries have basically ended his career, and I think management has made a similar determination. This move was probably their plan B, but I still think and hope it can work out pretty well.

I am feeling better than my initial thoughts.

The reality is, we probably aren't getting any better than a B-level prospect either way.

Maybe Lyon's arm is shot. I hadn't considered that possibility either.

I like Brett Myers as a closer. I think he's probably the best option on the team to fill the role. And if he succeeds he will up his trade value. Win Win for the Astros. Another good move by new management!

Trying to get this picture to catch on as the courtside Morey equivalent.

    We have Morey

    We have Rick Smith

We need a better one for Mr. Luhnow. I'm pleased with his moves so far, and I don't mind waiting through some tough times. The Astros will get there eventually.

nobody is dumb enough to trade anything of value for that waste based on a good brief stretch of performing between now and the deadline.

going into the start of the season with lyon as your closer in hopes that you catch enough lightning in a bottle for him to be spun off for some minor league depth is a horrible mentality for a franchise trying to start fresh.

Lyon has been moderately successful closing games. And Lyon has been a decent/good reliever for most of his career.

I'm not expecting much, but if he performed like he did in 2010, he'd have trade value in 2012. Nobody is going to trade for him to be their closer, but could as a setup guy, who has proven he can close if need be.

    CJLarson,

That's the best one of the three.

I like the move. Clears up rotation spot for Livan to be the innings eater. No reason to have both of them in the rotation.

I also don't think it will hurt Myers' trade value. It's not like teams were lining up to trade for him anyway, and if there is a team looking for an innings-eating starter like Myers, it's not like they can't move him back into the rotation relatively easily.

This is just about perfect! Let's hope we can use this picture many times during his tenure as GM. I need any and all excuses to see this pic.

Not that easy to go from closer to starter mid-season. Much easier to go the opposite direction.

smart gamble to me. Smart for his trade value, and smart to try and add someone else to the rotation who is more likely to build trade value there than Myers would have. And smart for the team's success..there's more depth in mediocre rotation guys than there is in the bullpen.

Myers had a 2.87 era with 21 saves as Phillies closer in 2007. Contending teams seem to need bullpen more than anything else at the deadline. So I really like this move.

It's probably as big for the development of the young pitchers to know they can pitch well and their wont be a shaky bullpen to blow the lead.
