What is the Texans place in the upcoming draft -- strictly by record or do they have any 'expansion' draft picks still coming?
I'm not positive about this, but I think as long as the Texans are in the bottom eight teams in the league as far as records than they will get extra picks, but if they keep on winning they will play their way right out of those picks.
as long as they don't make the playoffs, they'll receive extra picks in addition to the pick they earn by virtue of record. where the supplemental picks fall will be based on their draft position.
So who's right? I've always thought that they just didn't have to make the playoffs for the extra picks. But then that article in the Chronicle(can't remember who wrote it) said that they need to be in the bottom eight. If it's the latter, I might almost hope that they go ahead and tank the remaining games.
If you read that in the Chronicle, it was wrong. The playoffs are the line of demarcation between getting or not getting the bonus picks in the 2003 draft. They'll likely be in the bottom 8, too, though.
In the 2003 draft, Houston will receive one regular pick per round based on its 2002 record, the same as all other clubs. The Texans will also receive seven additional picks in the 2003 draft -- unless they make the playoffs in 2002, in which case they will receive no extra picks. These picks will vary depending upon Houston's 2002 won-loss percentage, as reflected in the following year's draft order. These additional picks would be allocated in the following manner: 2002 W-L Extra Picks in 2003 Draft #25 through #32 One pick in Rounds 3, 4 and 5. Two picks in Rounds 6 and 7. #19 through #24 One pick in Rounds 4 and 5. Two picks in Round 6. Three picks in Round 7. #13 through #18 One pick in Round 5. Two picks in Round 6. Four picks in Round 7. Playoff team No extra picks. The first extra Houston pick in any round will fall 16 slots below the club's original choice in that round, but no lower than the end of the round, after any compensatory picks. Good work! What this realistically means is if the Texans finish higher than the bottom eight, then basically, their extra 3rd round pick becomes an extra 7th round pick. The value of a third round pick is debateable, but I wish the NFL hadn't incentivized a poor record. It makes me wonder, sometimes, about the offensive schemes. It sometimes seems like the Texans have decided to play balls to the wall defense, but limit the offense to where there is not a chance to win too many games this year. Even with the weak line play this year, there have been many situations this year where play selection makes you think they are trying to throw games. It's not just my opinion, because the announcers comment on it, too.
If we have a high enough pick, I think Willis Magehey RB from Miami has to be our pick. He broke all of Edge James's running records at Miami and our running game sux bad. He makes Miami's offense as dangerous as it is, not Ken Dorsey. Also, he should of won the Heisman. We have recievers and we have a quarterback and our offensiev line needs veterens not rookies. We also have a pretty good defense. What we need is a real threat at the running back position. That's where Willlis Magehey fits in. Lets make this the offical 03' draft pick page for the Texans. hopefully he does, I was not aware of that. If he does not, than my pick changes to Larry Johnson (not grandma ma from the late Charlotte Hornets) but the RB from Penn State. He looks like another Eddie George, except bigger and more lateral movement then Eddie.
Roy Williams said he is staying in school for one more year. Why? I have no clue. If he came out he would easily be a top 10 pick.
Or maybe he can win now that Griffin is gone. Mack has a good rep with players. He got Ricky to stay, Jammer to stay, and now Roy. Believe it or not, with the right coaching and advisement, some of these kids want to graduate and enjoy college football. Roy will be a top 10 pick, whenever he comes out.
Everyone says that Roy wants to graduate, but the fact remains that most football players require 4.5 to 5 years of school to complete their degree. Is Roy REALLY on track to graduate? Don't forget that in the Spring of 2004, Roy must also focus on NFL combine stuff, and individual workouts, making it really hard for him to graduate for May of 2004, if that is the plan. This isn't a knock on Roy, just a simple fact of college football players in general.

If he has big time stats in the upcoming bowl game I think he will change his mind once again. Plaxico said he was coming back for his senior year and in the Gator Bowl he had 220yds against Florida and changed his mind. If the season ended today the Texans would have the #3 pick so we may still have a shot at Charlie Rogers.
