You can amnesty any player during the offseason. But you can only do it one time for the duration of the CBA. So if we want to get rid of Scola & clear up cap space we can do it after the playoffs.

Has to be someone that was on your roster when the CBA was signed. Not really any other candidates. (although not saying we should use it just to use it)

The amnesty can only be used on contracts that were valid with the team when the new CBA was signed. This is why there wasn't a mad rush to trade for Gilbert Arenas or Rashard Lewis at the beginning of the season. It really only lasts as long as the longest contract that was around when the CBA was signed. Not sure who that is.

As for the deadline someone mentioned; it has to be used at a certain date before the season starts, and that deadline has passed.

So trade him. Don't waste our amnesty on him. It's not like his contract is completely awful, and we only have 1 amnesty.

You actually think Lin is good? We let him go because both Lowry and Dragic are better and Flynn..well..he's under contract. If you can find a better PF than Scola making less than 10 mil..i'd like to know who.

I'm sure these guys will get the minutes that they earn, McHale doesn't give guys entitlement minutes. Scola won't be an impediment. What's the difference between paying him to play limited (or no) minutes and paying him to play for someone else in terms of Patterson or Motiejunas getting minutes?

Besides, these two can always get minutes at the 5. Hill most likely gone. Dalembert might be, too, if his play does not improve, or if he is traded.

As others have pointed out, you don't need to use the amnesty next year, can use it later on Scola if cap room is needed.
Also, Scola's contract (2 more guaranteed years after this one) will be easier to trade as it gets closer to expiration. In fact, given the non-guaranteed nature of the last season on the contract, Scola's deal can be useful in a future deal a couple years from now-- much like Erick Dampier's deal was when Dallas used it to get Tyson Chandler and dump a few of unwanted contracts.

Which move(s), off season or in season has Scola's contract precluded us from doing?

And if we didn't pay him, wouldn't it have had a backlash on our reputation for not paying players their "fair" market value especially after the contract situation with Landry when he was a RFA?

Agree. Scola brings value. I think the schedule hurts someone like him vs other folks but when he's rested good things happen. The last couple games I've liked what I've seen on the defensive end. Fouls show me aggression. He needs to continue to use energy on that side of the court.

He's on a Rookie contract so he doesn't count. Lastly, He's not as good as Scola.

He is much better defensively and he is quickly becoming a good offensive player. He may not be better than Scola yet, but he will be.

Now that Scola's post game has evaporated it's harder to argue for him over Pat. I'm worried neither are quite good enough to play 30+ minutes per game on a contending team though.

idk. If we were to get rid of Scola I'd like to where we get a draft pick and an expiring contract. Maybe Scola to the Nets for Okur plus our draft pick back?

I really dont know how to get rid of Scola or even if I do want to get rid of him. And the question I have most in my mind is what if Scola is just playing poorly this season, but next season he'll be back to his old self. Too much questions.

To mazinger: I like Scola and don't think that his contract is bloated. 8~9 mil for an above average starter big man is definitely not bad (especially since the average starter in the nba makes something like 10 mil/yr). However, Scola is not the biggest bargain as Milsap at $6.7 takes that spot. Scola is being paid like what his role should be... the third option on offense. We just need that true-first option, then everything else would fall into place. On offense, player X should get max, KMart is reasonable at 12$mil as a very efficient 2nd option, and Scola is acceptable as 3rd option @ 8+ mil, for his ability to blend and play off of option 1&2.

To St8THugg: you really don't get his point do you? Patterson is still on his rookie contract. Furthermore, our offense would suffer greatly if he was inserted in to the lineup. Ppat is decent as a pick/pop option but he does not have a post game and cannot create his offense. Also, until he gets his athleticism and aggressiveness back, he is a smart defender but not that much better than Scola. If Scola is a 3/10 on defense, Ppat right now is about 6/10.

I really like Patterson. I think he could play 35 mins a night on a contending team. Not yet, but soon enough. He has the skills to be a really good player in this league.

Why did we give Scola the contract? The Nets were going to actually offer slightly more money and there were rumors that Spanish teams wanted him back- http://www.netsdaily.com/2010/7/22/1581670/nets-readied-big-contract-for

Scola has shown flashes of his old self but has been insanely inconsistent overall.

Personally, I just hope those flashes become trade value and we save the amnesty for somebody we acquire.

Again, that is not how the amnesty works.
