yeah, wagner may have more points, but i think if they look at yao's efficiency, he has a pretty good shot, i mean, his efficiency per 48 minutes is ABOVE all star level. yao also offers blocks, rebounds, hopefully more assists (actually thats more the other rox fault) and intimidation on offense and especially defense, wagner is purely a one dimensional player.
Wagner might get it. He is putting up some big numbers, I think he scored over 20 points 4 games in a row at one point this year. But Yao should get it becasue he is on a good team, and he helped the team win. Yao numbers at the end of the season. 14 ppg 11 rpg 3 bpg But it all goes down to his team is winning and he is a part of it.
How many teams game plan against Wagner, Gooden or Butler? My guess is zero. Now how many teams game plan against Yao Ming? Every single one now. Yoa Ming impacts the games that he plays in much more than the other rookies in the league. As a matter of fact Yao Ming already causes teams to game plane for him as if he is a 5 time all star. Yao Ming is clearly the cream of this draft class and if all things are fair he will win ROY. One other thing to consider...what is Yao Ming finishes the season leading the league in F/G%? What if he finishes the year with the best F/G% of anyone in the last 30 years? ROY would be a slam dunk!
Hopefully Dick Vitale and his Duke boner don't get a vote. Maybe there will be co-rookies of the year again?
Yea, Jay Williams is struggling. That is a surprise to me, I thought he would be putting up alot better numbers than that. Jay Williams will be great NBA player, I just thought he would dominate from the start like Steve Francis did. I can't wait to see Yao in the rookie vs. sophmore game at the All-Star game. He is going to distroy the sophmores. Yao=R.O.Y
My only concern is that with Cat back, Yao's shot attempts will go WAY down. He had 18 and 19 shots the games before and only got 11 last night. He won't hit 8/11 every night and so will average about 12 points with so little in the way of opportunities. Too bad, Stevie is bound and determined to jack up 20+ shots regardless of whether he's hitting them or not.
That would be very nice, but it's going to come down to Stevie and Cat getting him the ball. The man is second in the NBA in points per shot. He should be getting more shot attempts. If he does, he'll clearly show that he's the second best center in the West and deserve a backup role in the all-star game.
Iverson's stats that year were 23.5 ppg at 41%, 4.1 rpg, 7.1 apg Marbury's stats that year were 15.8 ppg at 40%, 2.7 rpg, 7.8 apg I don't know if the playoffs were enough to make up that big of a difference. Personally, I can't see Wagner averaging more than 20 points a game this season. He will obviously end up averaging more assists than Yao, but Yao will have more rebounds and blocks. The vast advantage Yao will have in FG% and the fact that he will make the playoffs should put him above Wagner.
That could be the problem since I think if a player got voted to play the All Star game they don't have to play Rookie Challenge Remember Vince Carter in his rookie year?
Heres some interesting stats on Yao. Yao's stats since his breakout game against the Lakers in LA. 14.3 PPG 8.5 RPG 2 BPG 63% FG Very nice numbers. And that stretch included a couple of stinker games for him.
i didnt want to start a new thread but had a ming related question, sort of. does anyone know how big mark eaton was? a 1988 lakers/utah playoff game is being shown on the nba channel and mark eaton looks huge. maybe its that his arms are long or maybe he is thicker but i think he looks bigger than ming. just him standing in the middle is intimidating
Eaton was 7'5'' and a little over 300 lbs (315 or so?). He was indeed a monster. The only player in NBA history that could shut Hakeem down one on one.
I have two Yao Ming related questions...A friend and I were discussing Yao Ming, and he said that Ming had had a 1 for 12 shooting night...I maintained that he had done nothing anywhere near that, and I thought his worst shooting night was 4 of 11...Which of us is correct? 2nd) How many double doules has Yao had...because I could have sworn it was 3 or 4, but NBA.com doesn't have him listed among the leaders, the lower of whom have 3... Thanks. Peace JAG
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/gamelog?playerId=1722 Worst shooting game = 7/19 (12/6 vs. New Orleans) Double doubles = 4
The only reason Wagner is getting about 20 ppg is cuz he's jacking up 30 shots a game. Imagine that, a rook getting 30 shots a game, every game. If anything that tells the sorry affair of his team, not actually his skill. Wagner's shooting percentage is awful and I don't think he will ever be like Iverson. Like him or not, AI brings his team steals and is an amazing clutch player. Even if Wagner does become mini Iverson, his impact in the league won't be as much as what Yao can do if he fulfills his potential. If Yao doesn't become ROY I'll be throwing fishgut at David Stern. I don't think Yao cares personally but Rox fans sure do.
MacBeth, actually, none of you two are correct. The worst one is: 0-2, in the game against seatle. You may check the double-double in the nba link follows: http://www.nba.com/statistics/default_regular_season_leaders/LeagueLeadersDD2Query.html
