I have noticed Ming's jump shots are a bit off in the last few games (comparing only with his previous 66% :D) ). I know Rudy must have told him to improve this inside game, strength, and aggressiveness. But Ming got to hit better percentage on his jump shots, for a player with his accuracy. His jump shot percentage is like around 65% in pro ball in China. In serveral of his fadeway jumpers, he jump for far away from opponent player tha he almost fell off his balance. That's definitely an overkill for his height. There is like a 3 feet distance between his hands and his opponent hands. He should just jump straight, like against Duncan the other night. It is not like anyone can block him anyway. :D

When Ming hits better jump shots, it also makes it easier to go inside, or forcing double-team.

Why do we keep picking this guy apart? It is a long season and he is a ROOKIE. He will have ups and downs and he has never faced this level of competition. He is getting a feel for the NBA game. He will be fine.

Lots of people can block Yao's turnaround fadeaway jumper...for example, I know Eric Dampier did on the 1st play of the game against golden state. Yao's tall, but it's not like he jumps very high. That fadeaway is very blockable. Yao should work on trying to shoot the hook shot. A 7'5" man shooting a hook shot, now THAT is unblockable. Once Yao can get his hook shot going down with consistency, that's when he will truly dominate.

Ming does get his shot swatted during games, so your statement above is definitely not true. As a wild guess, he's been blocked 6-10 times already this year. Without elevation, a 7 footer can block a 7'5" guy's shot fairly easily especially with the way Ming shoots the ball.

I think the fadeaway jumpshot would be ridiculously impossible for people to block if he could get elevation and really fade away on it. It's what made Hakeem's turnaround jumper so unstoppable. The only thing that could stop it was if Hakeem missed it, not anyone necessarily blocking it.

It also seems that they have Ming working on a hookshot. He's still not used to taking hook shots from the looks of it, but if he ever gets that shot down and learns how to establish position in the post, it's over. You just don't block a 7'5" hook shot too easily.

We don't want Grant Hill to catch up him on the field goal percentage. ;)

No, I am not trying to be picky on him. It is just an aspect of the game that Ming can easily improve on. Or like dn1282 said, coaches should try to work on a hook shot with Ming, which will be very unstoppable. I know they have focus on this strength, post game, and aggressiveness. But if they get get an unstoppale outside shot from Ming, it will make lots of things easier (going inside, commanding double-team, etc)

Agree. My point is not really about jump shot, fade away shot, or hook shot. My point is that the coaches should work on some outside shot for Ming. With his height, accuracy, soft touch, jumping ability for 7-5 (never seen bradley jump on his shots), he will be unstoppable from outside. The moves/tricks he has, the harder it is for the defense to anticipate his move. Drive, jump shot, fadeaway, hook shot, straight shot, pass to team mates, etc.

I know Ming's a good shooter, but the Rockets drafted him because they needed someone to help them out inside. I wouldn't be surprised if, after Ming gets truly acclimated to playing inside, the Rockets let him start mixing it up more and adding more outside shots, but right now I think they really need him around the paint.

(Now watch him go out and start nailing 3-pointers tonight.)

Yeah, Rez I am. I lurk here mostly. I love this bbs. I am a longtime Rocket fan, but I know football much better, so I tend to post little here, although I can hold my own..........

    ruyun5, I understand. I agree.

BTW: Yao Ming ALREADY had a hook shot before he came to the Rockets.

I disagree. I know Fran Blinebury will disagree too. His quote "We're past the point of wondering if he (Ming) belongs, whether he'll fit. ... What we need to see is Yao shoot more. A lot more"

Trying to grow only Ming's inside game and not the outside game is like growing him only one-leg and truncate the other. Rudy need to let Ming loose and play his total game.

The coaching staff is well aware of Ming's strong points. They are trying to work on his weaker points. He does have a hook shot but needs to keep on working on it. I think he will be able to hold his position in the post as he gets stronger.
