Mathematics is neither liberal nor conservative - begone heathen. :D

In the meantime, here's some reading for you. Much of Star Trek's technology was based on plausible/theoretical science.

You wouldn't believe how this was to explain to my girlfriend:

"How can a monkey type the Complete Works of Shakespeare?"

"It can't, but you see, if you have a infinite number of monkeys..."

"I don't care how many monkeys you have, none of them will speak English."

    Following up on PSJ's point:

    4/3 = 1.33333...

    Pi = 22/7 = 3.14159....

Both are rational numbers. Both have decimal representations that can have an infinite number of digits; however Pi has a greater value (magnitude) than 4/3.

    22/7 > 4/3

I think that may be my favorite quote of all time on this BBS.

especially since I avoid political threads with all my strength, but i LOVE math!

Actually, PSJ said that 7/3 was an infinite number of greater magnitude than 4/3, which is not a valid statement IMHO.

By the way, 22/7 is an approximation of Pi. Pi is most definitely an irrational number. :)

7/3 > 4/3 is most definitely is correct.

Edit: I stand corrected. You are correct in that 22/7 is an approximation.

    Obviously 7/3 > 4/3 :)

However neither of these are infinite numbers, as PSJ stated earlier in the thread. That's my point. We were talking about magnitudes of infinity, as explained by various people.

Citing two rational numbers, one of which has a greater value than another, which both have an infinite number of digits when expressed as decimals, is actually irrelevant with regard to magnitudes of infinity.

The infinity is in the number of digits, not the value of the number. Therefore the value of the number is not important.

Of course, if we live in an infinite universe, somewhere, we're having this discussion, except I'm agreeing with you :D
