    Jordan in 1997 - 2.4 million votes.

Yao would be lucky to get even a quarter of that.

Like Ichiro, Ming has a whole country behind him, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts the All-star game.

I wouldn't want to bet against all those Chinese/Asians fans. It will definitely interesting to see how many votes Ming will get this year with a modest stats so far. When he start putting up big numbers in the upcoming years, I think he will break all the records for getting the most votes ever for the all-star games. In fact, it wouldn't be surprised me at all if he is in the top two vote getters for the Center position this year.

but china isn't really a basketball country and japan is a baseball country. i really doubt that millions of chinese are going to go online just to vote ming into the all star game.

Well, forget about the whole country of China for a moment just consider his home city of Shanghai is enough to put him over the top. I looked up stats for Shanghai, it has 14 million resident and 785,000 of those reportedly get on the internet regularly as of august of this year. I don't know how many of 'em are sharks fan or follow Yao ming's progress in the NBA but there's got be lots of votes there. If the record for the all star vote is 2 million (which is kinda low), I think Yao has a chance to smash that record.

I heard that a lot of chinese fans vote for yao on NBA website. yes, China is not a basketball country, but it is still the second favorate sport in china next to soccer, so I think there are a lot of fans have voted or will vote for yao, at least several millions I guess, especially the students

Yao Ming might even surpass Jordans high of 2.4 mil. votes! I expect if he does this, then he would be a starter by Fan demand!

Does the Government of China even let their people reach NBA.com?

China has hardcore restrictions on the internet.

But I am sure they can reach NBA.com.

The commie government in China bans two types of web sites:

p*rn: playboy, penthouse, etc. (Damn those *holes why ban p*rn?!?!)

Politically subversive subjects: taiwan and tibet independence movement, flg, etc.
