thoughts? it's just an hour and a half up the road for R.C. I think he would be great for Baylor's program. Don't know if he'd take the job...but I'd sure like to see Baylor make a run at him.
RC probably wants to get away from the competition in the Big 12 South, esp if A&M becomes good again. With that being said, Baylor should go after him, if RC's interested. RC might be able to bring a few of his A&M recruits to Baylor, which is in major need of a talent upgrade.
Interesting thought but I dont think thats gonna happen. R.C. bleeds maroon. Plus he's already got a job as a special assistant or something like that.
RC is a class guy and that is why so many people would like to see him at their university. Why he will not go there. He is not going to go to a school: 1) In the Big XII 2) That will get 3rd tier talent (lower than the A&M talent he chose from) 3) With the lack of alumni and fan support 4) With tough academic standards (making it tougher to get players) 5) Where he has to build a program It would make little sense to go to a program like UH or Baylor. The head aches with building a program are not something a guy that has put in the time he has put in willl want to deal with. Its very unlikely that he will coach again, but if he does he will go to a program that is established that he can just come in and utilize his coaching experience.
Baylor football is freaking career suicide. Baylor needs to hire a young coach from the I-AA level looking to take the next step. Hopefully after a 7-8 win season, he'll dump the school and move on.
would you have said the same about Northwestern before Barnett? how about Kansas State a few years back??
You assume Baylor will be able to find a coach like Barnett. It's possible. Tougher road to win a championship in the Big 12. 7-8 win bowl seasons are possible, but like Barnett the coach won't stick around after some success. Where is Northwestern now? Comparison to a private school is much better than to a public school. K-State has resources that Baylor does not. K-State also has easier admission standards and recruits heavily in juco's.
Mackovic had a job title at UT too. Doesn't mean a thing. Baylor won't be down forever. Hell, they had a winning season just 7-8 years ago. A decade ago, they were as high as #8 mid-season. I think it's unfair to even compare them to Kansas State or Northwestern, who were both down for years and years and years.
They have not competed in any year since being in the Big XII. That is the more telling stat. Its very unlikely that they ever will either. The only reason they are in the Big XII is b/c of one Ann Richards who threw a fit and made threats if they were not in the Big XII. Nice little footnote to that... the gray haired, silver spoon speaker doesn't even live in Texas any longer. Now, of all places, she lives in New York.
I think the only way to know what Slocum would do is to ask him. That is precisely what Baylor should do.
Baylor is a good contributor to the Conference. The only thing they're not pretty good in is football.
Without Ann Richards hissy fit, I don't believe there would have been a Big 12. There was talk of UT and A&M heading to the Pac 10 or UT going Pac 10 while A&M going SEC. Richards forced UT and A&M to take Baylor with them...Big 8 came calling and the rest is history. Reedy Forgot name Steele Who's next?
Dave Roberts was after Reedy. I think if they decide on Fry, it'll energize the alumni. It'll also be a very recognizable name that may help in recruiting.
I do remember the Pac-10, SEC talk, but as I remembered it in the end stage Texas and A&M were likely going to the old Big 8 and the Texas Legislatures got in a huffy to protect both Tech and Baylor (of course leaving UH, Rice, SMU and TCU to scamble). Probably instead of Baylor, UH should have been the 4th team (why not strengthen the other major comprehensive state institution). Or if they wanted to improve their academic scores to use Rice. Was it Richards that protected Baylor over Rice or UH I don't remember. I am sure it was some interesting jockying to see why Tech and Baylor went and UH and Rice didn't.
Richards protected Baylor over UH. It was originally supposed to be UT, A&M, Houston, and Tech. Those are the biggest schools in the state in that order. But Houston got the shaft thanks to Richards, and as a result UH athletics since then have been horrible. I hope they can turn it around.
Someone please explain why would the Big 8 want UH over Baylor at the time the conference was forming? Sure they have more students but nobody goes to games. When I was at BU, we had 45,000+ at home games. I just don't see how UH would be a better fit than BU. Everyone loves to get on the "kick Baylor out" high horse. When you look at overall athletic programs, Baylor is in the middle of the Big 12. Hardly grounds to "kick them out" Baylor just happens to suck at football and most people down here only look to football.
