Currently the Timberwolves are giving up 93.1 PPG, which is the 3rd best in the conference. Their opponents are shooting .431 from the field good for 11th in the NBA. The Rockets are giving up 99.2 PPG. Their opponents are shooting .466 from the field which is ranked 27th. I think sometimes we put too much emphasis on coaching philosophy and not enough emphasis on the actual roster....you know the guys that go out there and actually play.
Pretty much and thats why i called bs on morey wanting more defensive minded staff. If you had dream at center, martin,scola,and chase = poor defensive team. It also dont help lowry is below the free throw line so much getting offensive rebounds. I know it looks good in the stat sheet, but it throws the floor balance off and allows the opponet to get a transition game going.
Adelman's coaching preaches defense. His teams have been pretty good defensively. It gets overlooked and he is seen as an offensive-minded coach mostly because his teams have been terrific on offense.
When Van Gundy left, Battier said he could still hear gundy's voice in his ear the next season during practice. I don't know if the facts support this, but it seems that when a defensive coach leaves and is replaced by an offensive coach, the team still plays good defense for a year or two.
Don’t bother. The Adelman is allergic to defense myth will live on no matter how many facts you bring up. They will point to Rubio as being the reason the Wolves defense has jumped from 27th to 9th in the league. The Rockets were a little below middle of the pack (18th) in defense last season with Martin, Budinger, Scola, and a 6’6’’ center as starters. It was Adelman, though, that kept us from the elite ranks.
Give Adelman's team of last year rim protection like Dally and we would not have been so bad defensively. Adelman is a better coach than McHale whichever way you look at it
Those are solid numbers they have in Minny, our defense continued to be outstanding under Adelman as long as we had Yao healthy down there. Since the 2nd OKC game our defense has been much better, I´m looking for it to look great tonight against the worst offensive team in the league. Whether we end up giving 99 or 91 points, I'm more concerned with having a healthy differential between PPG and points allowed, and then being able to stop having defensive break-downs and being able to make a stop or two when it really matters.
Adelman's defense versus McHale? Even if he was twice Adelman's age, I'm pretty sure McHale would destroy him with ease. He'd still have some semblance of those amazing post skills, and I'm pretty sure the jumper is the last thing to go.
It has. Through Jan 16th, the Defensive Efficiency for our current starting lineup (Lowry, Martin, Parsons, Scola, Dalembert) is a stifling 82.5. For the old starting lineup (Lowry, Martin, Budinger, Scola, Hill) it is 106.4. That's from basketballvalue.com.
I don't understand how McHale's reputation as a defensive coach for Minnesota. When he was coach for most of the season, the timberwolves defense was putrid. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2009.html 25th out of 30th in Defensive efficiency 22nd out of 30th in Opponent's ppg. Even without a 7 ft center like Dalembert, Adelman had better numbers.

Yeah I have a hard time believing a team with Kyle Lowry, Parsons and Dalembert has less defense than a team with Rubio, Love and Darko.

You may be mixing up points per possesion with "opponent's points per possesion. One is an offensive measure. It's the oponnent's points per possesion that's important. Timberwolves' opponent's points per possesion 100.2 Rockets' opponent's points per possesion 107.2 Timberwolves are holding their opponents 7 pts fewer than the Rockets for every 100 possesions.
Good to know. I have no doubt the Rockets will improve on defense this season due to better defensive personnel.
