I just believe that any time a focus is on race, rather than merit it hurts all sides of the equation.

That's a wonderful dream and one that I share I just don't think we will ever have a pure meritocracy anytime soon and doing away with all forms of affirmative action will not bring it.

"Why do black people have to have their ethnicity celebrated during the month with the least number of days? Why can't we get the month with the most days? Racism!"

There wouldn't be a need to balance the scales if people in power believed what you wrote above DD.

The very least AA has done is to bring diversity to the workplace, which a lot of people spend the bulk of their lives inside. I agree that AA should be class based rather than race based, but we're deluding ourselves if we think careers and education levels have balanced.

Rather than throwing the baby out of the bathwater, change and improve the system instead. We've had 500+ years of institutional slavery and racism, so to think that we're all on a level playing field when people are still alive to recall Jim Crow is either overly optimistic or blatantly delusional.

Maybe not - instead of forcing, perhaps incentivizing might be a better way of doing things...

    Just spit balling.

Malcolm X was a separatist, and then a leftist social protestor. Keep in mind that Nation of Islam dogma is some of the most intellectually and creatively embarassing stuff blacks could have ever written. Nothing in there that would justify whites, modern conservatives or moderate, middle-class blacks certifying a national holiday for him.

The race baiters, bigots, and clowns really come out on this day. It's pathetic.

Keep in mind that Malcolm X abandoned the Nation of Islam dogma and by the time of his death was embracing a more inclusive world view. That is one of the reasons he was killed by the Nation of Islam.

Assume I am white and I cite some bad white apples. Does that make me self hating?

Yeah, but he was Shabazz by then, and even at that point he was talking about bring the US up on War Crimes and the like. Liberals and poor blacks can probably identify with him, but nothing he espoused or accomplished justifies a majority of leaders or institutions celebrating him nationally. King is both the philosophical leader of Civil Rights and modern non-violent protests. The practical impact of integration was drastic enough for whites that they wouldn't have ratified it: after the fact, by re-electing LBJ; without some symbolic appeal to their religious and patriotic morality.

    Speaking from experience?

I'm sorry you were spurned by your black lover, but you really shouldn't take out your sexual frustrations out on an entire ethnic group.

Can we start banning people (from D&D at least) for this kind of crap? It's so frustrating seeing racist posts under the preposterous farce of spurning an honest and thoughtful discussion. I try to give the benefit of the doubt -- it's understandable, though still ignorant, when one has limited experience with a certain people-group -- when one expresses racially insensitive views, but stuff this blatant doesn't deserve our patience.

Also, I've never neg repped anyone before, but this would be a good time right? Right??

    Please say yes.

This kind of attitude is the reason why America is still so segregated, not integrated. It's a salad plate, with apples in apple's section, orange in orange section. They just don't mingle. The only thing that ties people is money.

not based on class, but income (perhaps that's what you meant). if the goal is to redress poverty and opportunity this is the most fair process. you'd still capture a lot of minorities, but the system would be colorblind, which is what dr. king was after.
