    I hate the Jazz.

But seriously, jazz music is awesome. Played the sax myself and used to want to be in the school jazz band in middle school.

Personally, I hate all great music. My favorite jazz artist of all time is Kenny G. Because he is an artist and is the ultimate embodiment of the jazz art.

Manny's list is stupid. I think he must have just read an article about some jazz musicians and then just listed them.

I am very sad that Charles Mingus isn't on either of the lists given so far. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is still my favorite jazz album of all time, and the rest of his works aren't far behind.

poster Cannonball is going to be pissed unless and until there is a mention of the late great saxophone player Cannonball Adderley, featured on jazz's seminal album, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. he is also known for his work Mercy Mercy Mercy among many others.

but I am an even bigger fan of his brother Nat the cornet player.

Nat brought us the famous "Work Song" and "Jive Samba" from my favorite jazz album of all time- "Them Dirty Blues"

known as The Cannonball Adderley Quintet featuring Nat Adderley, the other musicians on that album were

Julian "Cannonball" Adderley – alto sax
    Nat Adderley – cornet
    Bobby Timmons – piano
    Barry Harris – piano
    Sam Jones – bass
    Louis Hayes – drums

I like me some jazz. all kinds, but more the more funky and fusiony the better, usually, some acidjazz as well. Love listening to Herbie at almost any point of his career.

All good examples listed here though.

    Stuff I've tried recently...

Elephant9, Walk the Nile (This is really more like ELP jamming, but jazzy nonetheless)
David Fiuczynski's Headless Torsos (pretty creative guitar playing on this, if a bit Jeff Beckish)

I like Praxxis quite a bit (Bernie Worrell ftw), and am a fan of Buckethead projects of that nature. . The latest I've been listening to is 'Inamorata' which is a collaboration with Bill Laswell, Bernie and others. It has some really good stuff on it. Not quite as good as Hellborgs Octave of the Innocents though.

Also have been listening to Django Reinhardt a lot lately after hearing it at a friends house and remembering how much I like it.

I played piano in my high school jazz band all 4 years. Awesome genre.

My favorite Cannonball album is "Live in San Francisco". It was the first album he recorded with his quintet after leaving Miles. My second favorite is "Nippon Soul" which was a live concert in Japan in 1963 when he had expanded to a sextet, adding Yusef Lateef on tenor sax, flute, and oboe.

I'm a saxophone player. I got my degree in Jazz Studies. I try to play as much jazz as I can but I make most of my money from churches and private party bands. I had a jazz trio that played twice a week for two years but that gig went bye bye in November so I'm not playing as much jazz publicly as I used to.

Here are my favorite sax players:
    Lester Young
    Charlie Parker
    Dexter Gordon
    Stan Getz
    Sonny Stitt
    Hank Mobley
    Cannonball Adderley
    Phil Woods

    And modern guys:
    Joshua Redman
    Chris Potter
Joel Frahm - my current fav
    Michael Brecker
    Vincent Herring

    Other instruments:
Trumpet: Dizzy, Miles, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove
Trombone: JJ Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Frank Rosolino, Wycliffe Gordon
Piano: Monk, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Cedar Walton, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Brad Meldhau, Dave Bribeck, McCoy Tyner, Diana Krall

This video just hit the web this week. Chris Potter playing Tune Up a Capella. IMHO, Chris is the sickest sax player alive today.
