Who do the Rockets owe draft picks to (1st and 2nd rds), who owe them picks, and what future transactions could put them in a more advantagous situation?

We owe a first round pick to Memphis to complete the Steve Francis deal, and it's only protected if it's top three. It will be unprotected in 2004. The pick will probably be in the 11-13 range...The LAST thing this team needs is another lottery pick...

the pick houston owes memphis has to be 1-13 so what happens if the rocks can't give them a pick that high?

I'm fairly certain that Chicago owns us a pick in the Bryce Drew deal.

I don't think the pick we give to Memphis has to be 1-13. It's just our pick where ever it is. I guess it was lottery protected until last year (meaning we had the choice of whether to send it or not). This year we will only have that option if it's top 3, and next year not at all. I think the 1-13 stipulation came from the fact we couldn't give them someone elses 1st rounder unless it was 1-13.

I would like get Steve Blake, Kirk Hinrich or Nick Collison. I think Blake or Hinrich could eventually run some plays and Collison is a good big man to have around. Hes a tough rebounder and he can dominate inside.

Collision seems to be a good fit. Every team needs a player like him on the inside. Steve Blake....Its a tough call for me. I've been a Terp fan for years. I've watched Steve run a team to perfection. He has a good shot, unselfesh mentality, and played excellent "D" on J. Williams when they matched up. However, I've also seen Blake when I wasn't sure if he could tie his own shoe. At the pg spot, you can't afford that. The team shuts down. I know that running a team comes with experience and he would have time to do that behind Francis. I guess when its all said and done, I would give him a shot at the backup pg spot.

The Rockets' -- and every team's -- draft situation is described here. I researched and wrote Houston's section, so I will take it as a personal affront and be very offended if you don't read it, accept it and commit it to memory. :D

This is how I read it:

I would like to get Bryce Drew, Matt Maloney or Jason Collier. I think Drew and Maloney could run some plays and Collier is a good big man to have around. He's a tough rebounder and he can dominate inside.

They definetely need to try and get TJ Ford if he decides to come to the draft this year. TJ Ford is the best pt. guard in college basketball today. I would love to see TJ and Steve in the backcourt.

The Rockets could grab a true point guard who can shoot in Luke Ridnour of Oregon.

Two second rounders -- due after there will only be one round to the draft! That is the report, of course, just one round. And the immortal Drew drew nothing in the trade, ultimately. Like he never left us...

What happens if we promise somebody the Brooklyn Bridge in a trade and it turns out we don't have it to give them?

That's why the NBA doesn't approve trades that involve the Brooklyn Bridge or a draft pick that the offering team won't necessarily have. Our deal with Memphis can't be for a top 13 pick regardless. The top-13 stipulation could apply only to a substitute pick, as a backup.

I would love to see TJ do what he is doing in college in the NBA (especially for the rockets). But, do you think he really can do it? he is just soo small and skinny. He also is not a great scorer although he seems to get the job done in the clutch

TJ is probably the toughest player in college basketball right now, with that and his unbelievable court vision there is no doubt in my mind he will be a force in this league. He is also an extremely hard worker, who is steadily improving his jumper. Likely a top 5 pick in the 2004 draft.
