You know what's sad? When I first got my license and I was learning how to drive.
My driving instructor NEVER even discussed blind spots. We talked about everything else which is good, but how many times have you seen cars that have been side swiped?
I'm willing to bet half of those accidents occur from people not turning their damn heads, or at least people should buy a pair of 99 cent blind spot mirrors at your local auto zone (They suck at night, so still turn your head)

Well, damn, you just posted the thread and you've already had your next negative road incident. Are you raging out there or what?

Methinks the OP is an elitist. Not everyone can afford to go to Sears Driving School when they first start to learn driving.

This. I check my mirrors every couple of seconds on the freeways cause of how people race up and change lanes, shooting gaps, etc. When I am changing lanes I look at my mirrors closely, then turn my head to make sure:

    A) no one is moving into that lane from the other side
    B) to spot the clueless drivers who ride in my blind spots.

In general, it's a good idea to know what cars are around you at all times. It's those drivers that don't that get into trouble...because it means they are not paying attention.

No, I was just chilling and not looking for trouble. I guess trouble finds me. Story of my life...

And how hard is it really to check mirrors? I too have seen many near misses from people just changing lanes without looking. Left, right, and rearview every ten or so seconds. Nothing hard about that. And if someone has been driving for long enough, they should also be able to sense a car near their blind spot.

i ride a moto & i pay very much attention to who checks their mirrors...a game/defensive mechanism i use when i'm stupid enough to get boxed into traffic while on a bike. Driver's are shockingly careless.

I generally only pass in the left lane. Unless I am the lead car with no one around. However, if I am going more than 5 miles over the speed limit and someone starts tailing the crap out of me, I slam on my brakes. Scares the sht out of them, and they usually get angry and start flicking me off, as they pass I smile and wave and mouth gtfo my tail!

I agree though, people need to learn to drive. It drives me crazy when I sit through traffic because there is an accident on the other side of the freeway, or because some idiots can't merge with oncoming traffic at the correct speed.
Don't enter a highway with a 70 mph speedlimit at 50 mph. Don't slow down 50 yards before turning if you have a turn lane especially. Don't tap your break every time the car in front of you does. Don't take 20 seconds to get going from a light when there are 100 cars behind you trying to make it through the very same light, 20 seconds turns into 5 minutes and only 15-20 cars make it through. Don't tail people. I want to make cardboard signs and keep them in my car, and show them to people when they piss me off.

One of the worst is when you are in traffic, sitting in the exit lane, and cars start passing you on the shoulder to exit...HEY A HOLE WHY DO YOU THINK I AM SITTING IN THIS LINE? FOR THE HELL OF IT? NO I AM EXITING JUST LIKE YOU, SO WAIT YOUR FRIGGIN TURN. I generally will pull over halfway in to the shoulder so no one can pass.

One time I did this in Houston and a tow truck came up the shoulder to get to the accident, so I pulled back into my lane, let him pass, then some guy tried to sneak in behind him and I quickly pulled back over, so he pulls behind me and around me to block me from getting back into my lane. I just kept easing forward, daring him to hit me, he's yelling and screaming out his window at me, and I am just laughing at him. Then he starts leaning over in to his glove compartment and I was pretty sure I was gonna get shot. But I didn't! Good times...

Anyways, I agree. Learn to drive people...

    Look no further.

I have to say your actions are totally irresponsible. I know it sucks being boxed in on a two lane highway. The only time I ever use the emergency lane to pass anyone is on a two-way one lane highway (traffic going each way in a single lane) where someone is attempting to make a left turn, but I don't speed up, I actually slow down because of the added danger.

Or conversely if I am the slow one on such a road I will pull into the emergency lane to let others pass me if traffic is particularly heavy coming the other way. I don't know if that is particularly legal but it makes sense, damn it.

That's a really stupid, irresponsible thing to do. You should yield to passing traffic in the left lane. Don't make it worse by trying to cause an accident or piss them off. You're the one who is doing something wrong. They're not "tailing" you, you're failing to yield.

Look no further? I really don't see the big deal in using the emergency lane. Ive only done it a few times and its only been on two lane freeways. I have an emergency, damn it.

You must have a great life if the 'trouble' that finds you generally involves drivers going the speed limit in the far left lane.

fact of the matter is that these days people have other things to do in the car. driving is priority two.

if you spend time focusing on driving..you wouldn't do a lot of the things mentioned in this thread.

now if we had a public transportation system that worked..some of these idiots would be off the road.

If folks gave themselves plenty of time, left their road rage at home, were courteous, and in general, drove passively, then most accidents would never happen. My experience tells me that at least 80% of people out on the roads have no clue what defense driving really means.

I drive 35,000 miles a year around Houston. Have probably driven over 500,000 miles in the last 15 years around Houston. Never received a ticket (only been pulled over 3 times) and have never been in an accident. I decided a long time ago to stay in the middle or right lane, stay within the speed limit and not tailgate anyone no matter how many assholes tailgate me and no matter if the person in front of me we wants to drive slower that everyone else.

In the end, none of it is worth getting into an accident and losing my life or taking someone else'.

As long as you are in the right lane going slow, then no problem. At least pass in the middle also. Drivers tailgating in the right lane make no sense.

That's kind of my mentality. Although I do get the rage every now and then!

Look I don't drive the speed limit...I usually go about 5, maybe 10, over because that is my comfort level. And I don't take the freeways as nearly as much I used to cause it's out of my way. But if I do, and I happen to find myself in the left lane (which isn't a lot), I'm not gonna go 90 to satisfy some stupid asses that think they can drive however fast they want. And more often then not, the flow of traffic is slower than what they are going.

Same thing going down I-10 ...there is absolutely too much traffic on the stretch from Houston to SA. Somewhere along the way I got tired of fighting with drivers that think they own the road and got tired of getting out of the way every time someone comes barreling down 20 over and rides my bumper, then having to move again to pass those going 20 under. So usually I stay in that left lane. If I feel there's a line of cars coming up I'll get over. But for those one or two of you that come out of nowhere every now and then, driving however fast you want, getting as close to my tail as possible and flashing your lights...no you can go around me cause I'm not moving. And I'm not gonna be bothered by you.

I don't think the OP is a good driver. I mean speeding the right lane means constant scanning for merges both left AND right lanes. I don't trust anyone to go the speed limit when they first merge. If I know I have to let them in, with no outs for me, then I'll have to break.

I'm not claiming I'm a godly driver, but at least I know I can be wreckless, and that I am being a bad driver when I perform wreckless "calculating" acts.

I do all the defensive driving stuff (eye scanning, horizon scoping, 3 second rule at 70+) but I also risk a wayyy lot more than I should. I'm that ******* driving 5+ the speed limit or following behind the car driving even faster. But I'm NOT the douchebag tailgating/cutting everyone off just to see him a minute later tailgating some granny.

Knowing the flow of traffic is more important than winning first in the fastest moron contest.

+1 in wrecklessness for being vindictive. Since I commute a lot from Plano to Austin I see all kinds of profiles. The Speed Police (jackass 60mph'er on the left lane) evolves in cunning to match his righteousness. If he knows you're going to cut him off, he will speed up enough to form the Wall of Morons (where no car can pass a wall of slower moving vehicles). So I give him his three second buffer. If I detect arbitrary velocity, then when there's an opening I cut him off enough to spook him. Otherwise, I assume they're clueless and pass them normally. This could embolden Speed Police to slow down even more, but maybe it's enough of a reaction to make them question whether what they're doing is worth it or even wonder why they're in the left lane with cars passing them every time.

On the flipside, if some ******* tailgates me just because I use the three second rule on the left lane with five or more lines of cars ahead of me, then I become like Speed Police and form a Wall with my left lane neighbor. To him, I'm inside a Wall of Morons, but the instant there's enough gap to reach another left lane car, I speed up a little. This prompts him to formulate an escape plan, possibly cutting off my left lane buddy...except I speed up enough to form another wall. Most get the hint and eventually behave and give me breathing space (or avoiding me altogether, win+2).

I get two things out of this:
    1) Smug satisfaction. 2) I def don't want to be stuck behind some moron who rides the breaks and possibly misjudges traffic. 3 seconds isn't enough buffer for those types.

All the friggin time and never enough. Adjusting them properly is great too.

If I'm driving 80 and I see someone catching up to me, I make a signal to yield. It's not a race w/ other cars. The only thing that matters is you getting from point A to point B.
