Besides some of the players not being great at defense, we are still better off on the defensive side than majority of teams in the NBA.

What is the main problem that McHale can not pinpoint right now?

In my opinion, it is position on defense. When teams space the floor, even just a tad bit. it throws the entire defense into a Shock. Why?

Why when teams start even a hint of a motion offense, the entire defense falls apart and we have a 6'4-6'5 sg slashing to the hoop on all our fowards, and getting the points!!!!?

Why is it that when a team starts the pick n roll, we can never pick up the help defense and rotate properly when 90% of the roster has been involved in hardcore help defense the past 2 years.

    UGH!

teaching a new system with limited practice time to young players and poor individual defending.

When 3 out of your 5 starters are Kevin Martin, Chase Budinger (not sure if he will start anymore or not), and Luis Scola, you're going to have major problems on defense. Whether the Rockets tank or not, I hope they try to sign Nic Batum this summer.

barring the lock out. we don't have very many "young" players that have dry feet on this team.

    Personnel.

It's silly to think a team starting Scola, Martin, Bud and Hill is going to be a top defensive team. If McHale wants to make the identity of this team "defense," they'll have to change the roster.

Pretty much this, those 3 guys don't offer much in the way of defense. McHale needs to tweak the rotation to best utilise his roster to not be so lopsided at times.

Beginning with Martin and Luis, they took an attempt that got vetoed.

i've at least seen scola take important charges or grab crucial rebounds when needed.
i don't think i remember martin ever making a significant defensive contribution in his entire time here.

if we have a dominant low post man, martin is great.
we can't have more than one defensive liability in our best 5 if we want to be a serious contender anytime soon.
the only other arguement against scola is that martin is such an efficient offensive 2/3rd option that his positives might outweight the negatives in the right setting. Also, good defense at the pf spot is much more important to success than at the SG spot.

i really believe that one of them has to go and that chase can't be a starter regardless of the outcome. i would get the best trade i can for either of these players and run with it.

    Not enough pitbulls and knifefighters...

    Lowry/Parsons is a good start.

We need more. I hope Marcus Morris brings the Phili toughness, and Patrick wakes up and becomes the monster he can be...

They lack teamwork. That pick and roll defense (especially against Scola) is absolutely horrible. Also off-ball defenders not keeping track of their man and it leaves openings everywhere.

Yeah I'm as confused as you are, we are bottom 4 in defense at least.

Clutch nailed it. Martin, Bud, Scola and Hill is nver going to work defensively. I dont know what McHale was thinking in the 1st place. It was obvious, anyone could have told him that.

It took him a while for him to finally realise Bud and Hill were not NBA starters.

to me it seems like we give up way too many points in the paint.

    Main problem: effort.

Main problem: starting the season with a lineup of Lowry, Bud, Hill, Martin, and Scola instead of Lowry, Lee, Morris, Gasol, Nene.

Is it really gonna be all about how Stern screwed our big plans forever? Given the roster we do have right now, I think at least changing the rotation would help...

Wrong people, and lack of effort or buy in by them.

They are terrible for those reasons, they are not good defenders and they are not really trying all that hard.

I don't believe the team has bought into what Kevin is trying to teach, at least some of the veterans don't look like it.
