My 135 pound brother eats a nearly identical diet to mine...I weigh 334.......think about that the next time you claim all fat people are lazy and that being thin is somehow a moral choice anyone can make.
you know, it doesn't have to be "ban this" and "ban that". You can do things like remove subsidies that are centered towards a meat-heavy diet, and make sure meat reflects the full cost of its' provenance. Right now, it's cheaper and a hell of a lot easier to get burgers from your local fast food joint than it is to cook a healthy, nutritious meal. The time thing can't be helped really, but the cost can. The USDA spends so much time spouting on and on about healthy portions, but then subsidizes a fat-heavy, meat dependent diet. For the libertarians out there, that's less government intervention trying to make Americans fat.
not suggesting you're lazy at all MM. I'm the guy too lazy to go fix a snack. Just trying to give the kiddies their best shot at staying healthy. For their own good. Won't work for all of them. Our schools banned all junk food. The kids adjusted a lot more easily then us parents imagined they would. It was really no big deal to them. And they still flock to the McD's after school. Take care of yourself, man. We all face different challenges. Balance your happy and fun with health and longevity. I think a happy, less stressed active person is probably healthier then a stressed out hyper skinny guy. And likely a lot more fun. But do take care of yourself.
You aren't free to do harm to the health of children. Parents can give their kids what they want. But there is no reason why coke has to be served at school. Kids can bring their soft drinks from home. But why should the school sells crap food to kids?
FDA oversees the regulation of both drugs and food. FDA receives most of its funding from pharmaceutical companies. This is a conflict of interest obviously if the regulating agency is funded by the entities they are supposed to be regulating. FDA and its directors are a revolving door from big pharmaceutical execs and food company execs like Monsanto-who manufacture mostly genetically modified organisms. Obviously another conflict of interest when the regulatory agency regularly employs individuals from the very corporations they are writing the laws for and overseeing; sounds like the financial sector huh? Part of the obesity problem is obviously excessive diet & lack of excerise but the very food people eat nowadays are laced with drugs (splenda), preservatives, food coloring & dyes, and chemical additives-all sanctioned as OK by the FDA. In fact, most foods are genetically modified to the extent that the core ingredients are not even found naturally, they're actually man made. People who are genetically susceptible to gaining weight are often fighting an unwinnable battle if they're not eating as if it was 1910 again. Europe has an entirely different set of laws concerning these drugs/food additives and genetically modified foods-one of the reason people are thinner over there. I wonder how many people have ever heard of genetically modified organisms & Monsanto in this forum? It's never discussed. They're the AIG/Goldman of the food world. A GMO & splenda article below for the person seeking some englightenment Spoiler Splenda happens to be another wonderful food additive found in almost everything from yogurt & bread to diet sodas & candy. People are eating it in massive amounts and aren't even aware. Education is the key to taking back our health, not a dependence on government because they're the one allowing this stuff in food to start with. Lots of great articles on health on Dr. Mercola's site.
Agreed - that's a lot of why Europe is so much healthier than us, at least down south. So much of the lifestyle of just walking everywhere makes such a big difference.
ribs are very healthy This is the problem with public health authorities, which have been pushing the idea that you have to exercise and deprive yourself of calories to lose weight. The idea that that gluttony and sloth, that defects of character, are the causes of obesity, is appealing to public health authorities because they don't have to do real science (or they can do bad science). <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/v8WA5wcaHp4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/9mIvj6HmHBg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Government health guidelines are making us fat. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cmwNpUJUjPg#t=8m10s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
That isn't a fat heavy diet. That's full of sugar and flour. A fat heavy, meat dependent diet is what we should be eating.
The only thing I could imagine doing is regulating advertising during kids programming, but you're probably killing a lot of local TV stations if you do that. Try introducing or even requiring team sports at school before junior high, and in high school broaden the exercise and athletic options to more than just scholarship sports.
My younger brother has been fat since he was in the 4th grade. His biggest vice was putting salt on all his food. Salt is fine and all but you can't put it on every damn thing you eat. I warned him for many years but he never heeded my warnings. Stack on top of that his lack of exercise - which I blame my parents - and his overeating and you are left with a 260 lbs 5' 9" 19 year old. Fat. Fat. Fat. What's worse is 1 year ago he lost 20 lbs. How did he lose the weight? He walked around the block two times once a day, 5 days a week, for 4 months, and cleaned up his diet. He did the bare minimum with a half-assed intensity but he saw some results. Still not sure why people treat fatness like rocket science. As for myself, 5' 9" 190 lbs, I got fat my last semester in college: Taco Bell. Sand. Thanks. That and an already existing alcohol consuming lifestyle lead to a 30 lb gain. I have lost 10 lbs in the past year. Again, was not rocket science to identify the source or how to mitigate my fatness.
Do I have to correct you again? What is this 1940?.. It isn't really calories.. it is WHAT we are eating.
Salt is good. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=its-time-to-end-the-war-on-salt This week a meta-analysis of seven studies involving a total of 6,250 subjects in the American Journal of Hypertension found no strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk for heart attacks, strokes or death in people with normal or high blood pressure. In May European researchers publishing in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that the less sodium that study subjects excreted in their urine—an excellent measure of prior consumption—the greater their risk was of dying from heart disease. These findings call into question the common wisdom that excess salt is bad for you, but the evidence linking salt to heart disease has always been tenuous. It was the diet. not rocket science, endocrinology
Eating fat does not make you fat.. eating meat does not make you fat.. sugars, heavily processed foods and carbs will do most people in and cause other issues...
