30 lbs is a lot. Try for 10-15/yr. Strength can come without lbs, too. Does anyone know what basketball people do for supplemnts? It seems creatine would make the wrong kind of muscle for constant fluid motion. To pick a wiry frame figure as example of strength without bulk - how about Bruce Lee? Of course, that may be more controlled release of force and whatnot, but I think he would also pick up a car in demonstrations, or hold concrete blocks aloft with outstretched arms for minutes, demonstrating mental control over muscle impulse.

The Rockets have said they don't need him to gain weight, just strength.

I think the additional upper body strength would help him move even faster on the floor.

30 more pounds up top = more injuries

I'd rather him just get stronger, not neccessarily bigger...

Look at the topic guys... he said "30 more pounds of muscle" 30 lbs of muscle is a world of difference from 30 lbs of fat or anything else. Most people can add 20-30lbs of muscle and still look the same as they did before, just more definition and tonage i guess :)

Yao Ming will be playing basketball year round. He'll have no summers to focus solely on building his body.

A month or so back, there was a thread that had all the research done about this. Yao doesnt have Chinese NT commitments next summer. I think the next time is in 2004.

I could be more specific, but the search function isn't working.

The World Championships are every year so unless China didn't qualify for them or something (I don't know if you have to qualify for them) then Yao Ming should be playing next summer.

i dunno about more injuries...it depends though. if he tries to get huge like kevin willis then maybe some back problems....but if you are comparing him to shaq then you have to remember shaq has gotten fatter along with more muscle. shaq isn't well known for his amazing body. when shaq quits playing ball he will blow up like barkley. when a guy like willis or a david robinson quits ball his will still be ripped and toned and in great shape. i think if yao is on a training regimen like jerry rice or malone then that would be perfect, but those are some amazingly difficult exercises that those guys put themselves through. however their bodies have held up like few others

also...if i am imagining yao with 30 more pounds of muscle then i am picturing a 7'5 david robinson/malone/willis/b. wallace size player. now that is scary...

fatfatcow:- Yao Ming is not going to put on an extra 30 lbs! I am sure he will have a slight increase after the next off season but his big pluss is that he is very strong in the lower body and light in the upper!! This means unlike previous giants he should last! Rudy has made a complete analysis of Yao Mings needs and has stated that Yao Ming doesn't need more weight, but needs to strengthen his weak ABDOMEN.

Yao Ming has no major game in China this off season, has he? If not then he will train most of the Summer with us I hope!

That'd be a good thing as long as he doesn't lose his nimbleness. I kinda like him the way he is. A little work in the weight room would do him good, but 30 pounds is a whole lot.
