Just a little something to step away from the Mo Taylor whirlwind. I need someone to verify this rumor I heard. Back in '84, when we drafted Olajuwon, I understand that Portland (who picked second that year) offered us a pre-draft trade of Glyde Drexler and their #2 for either Ralph Sampson or our #1. That would mean that we were given a chance to draft Akeem (at the time) to play center, pick up Glyde to play SF, and draft a certain SG out of North Carolina with the #2 acquired from Portland. That would have given us the line-up of: Center- Olajuwon Power Forward- Scrub, doesn't matter Small Forward- Clyde Drexler Shooting Guard- Michael Jordan Point Guard- Scrub, doesn't matter Now, is this true, or can I sleep at night? ------------------ "Have we not here the best cards in the game to win this easy match played for a crown?....." It's nice to think that we would have won at least 14 straight titles. really big ------------------ Don't you have anything better to do?
even with this team, would things still have turned out the way they do? would hakeem develop into the the player of 94 - 95? would drexler develop all his skills? would jordan develop his fadeaway, or even retire..? when you have three superstars like that.. who gets the ball.. ? but it's nice to think about ------------------ barkley for president
Well, if the trade part were to have gone down who's to say we would have chosen MJ with that #2 pick. I would like to think we would have. If I remember correctly, Dean Smith did speak with Bill Fitch at the time and told Bill that MJ was a sure bet to be one of the best in the NBA. Back in the 80's as we all know, the thinking was you had to have a big man to compete back then. That was certainly true back in those days. ------------------ And tonight...From the Bank United Center...Your Houston Rockets and Miami Heat in Game 1 of the 2004 NBA Finals!!!!!
I don't think having those three guarantees multiple titles. There's no guarantee that any of them would have become the kind of player they eventually became as a result of being their teams main focus. Could they have gotten along? I still wish they had tried. But these are the situations that gave rise to the "hindsight is 20/20" cliche. At the time, if you would have asked just about any coach or GM, "Who would you rather have, Sampson or Jordan?" I suspect the vast majority would have chosen Sampson. In the short term, it proved to be the correct decision. It didn't take the Rockets long to reach the finals with the Twin Towers. At the time, I suspect that was "proof" that the Rockets had made the right decision. ------------------
Hakeem would have still been great but I'm not sure how good Jordan and Clyde would have developed, since they wouldn't have been the main guy. Jordan would probably have been pretty good also but he used to shoot all the time and miss. It's not until he developed his little jumper did he become the best player to play the game. I'm not sure about clyde though. He developed much later, so he might not have been that good. But, definitely would have been better than sampson and rodney mccray. ------------------
I dont think we would have picked Jordan if we already had Clyde. I think we would have picked Charles. Hakeem, Charles, and Clyde. Not bad either I guess. Instead of 14 straight we would have only won like 12 straight ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Posting in stupid threads is not FUN! 2. Can someone keep this thread active? This question comes up every two months. ------------------ I've posted so much that what I say must be true. The latest on Maurice Taylor
Achebe, That profile (and pictures) of Mo in your link make me think he may not be the Rockets' solution at the PF. ------------------ Kenny Thomas had a foul called on him in the Western Conference Finals.
LOL. I like Clutch's allusion to the song on the cover "Yo Mo" ------------------ I've posted so much that what I say must be true. The latest on Maurice Taylor
I wish that trade had gone down and we picked Charles!!!!! What a team! ------------------ Miggidy Markell says: 1. Eastcoast is da sh*t 2. Rockets rule 3. Hip/Hop is dope 4. Buy the new Ruff Ryders album! Miggidy Markell is watching Stay STRAPPED & WATCH ya back or be Assimilated.
Who was picked fourth that year ahead of charles? 1 Akeem Olujawon 2 Sam Bowie 3 Michael Jordan 4 ????? 5 Charles Barkley ------------------
Sorry, Achebe, didn't mean to offend. I've only been posting for a little over a month. I just wanted confirmation.....and to stop talking about Mo Taylor. ------------------ "Have we not here the best cards in the game to win this easy match played for a crown?....." Bill Shakespeare
I would personally like to thank you Gascon, for starting this thread. Despite what Achebe said, I can only threads read about Mo' for so long. Its good to have some sort change on this board, something else interesting to talk about. The '84 draft theories are always good for that. Even if we do talk about them every other month... ------------------ Ugh, Another Rockets off-season....I'm gonna need a keg of Pepto-Bismol.
Well that could've happened if we had drafted Clyde instead of McCray and then accepted Chicago's offer of the #3 for Sampson. Different routes, same results, championships championships championships. ------------------
