If Dream retires his salary is still tradeable.

First off, is Dream definitely going to play this year?

If he does retire this year then his salary could be used to get funky, and to help get up under the cap even further next year.

e.g. (this is only an example... Ewing being in Cato's way, IMO, would be regression for the Rockets even if he were interested)

    HOU - Ewing
advantage: Three Million dollars extra in cap space next year. Temporary patch in solidifying the front court this year.

Wizards - Dream's salary (before filling out retirement papers) + Carlos Rogers
advantage: Gets out of a horrible contract situation years sooner (luckily, they'll commit this cap space now, rather than when Stevie's time comes up [IMG]).

Knicks - Rod Strickland and baggage or J. Howard.
advantage: Strickland might not have a bad attitude playing for a good team. Houston, Sprewell and Strickland also sounds alot more sound than Mason, Jones and Hardaway.

Any thoughts? Better trade scenarios or cap issues?

You'll never replace the Mo threads with these complicated scenarios.

    We need something simpler!!!

If I understand correctly in the initial scenario, we give Dreams contract $ to the Wiz, who give Juwan to the Knicks, who give Ewing to the Rocks.

I'm not so sure I just wouldn't rather have Juwan and pass on Ewing, It's a big contract but it's only until 2003. And even if we had Dreams $ in hand next year, who (other than the outside shot at Webber) would you rather have than Juwan? This is the problem the Bulls (and to a lesser extent Pistons & Raptors) have. They cleared alot of $, but nobody wants to play!

If we thought we could "reform" Taylor, I'm sure we would have the same feeling about Juwan Howard. The downside is Howard's stats are less impressive than Mo's. Then again everyone was quick to point out it was the Clips. Well, maybe it's also the Wiz.

    What's everyone think?

    Gater,

I personally would never want J. Howard to be on the Rockets. I think his $15M contract would cause friction in the locker room.
