Eh that's pure speculation. We could have worked some magic to get Hayes back here. Realistically we didn't want to put that much money out there. Realistically this team is only on the hook for $30 million next year (if they relinquish all the rights of expiring contracts). Hayes would have cut into that. If he would have been willing to take the $2.5 small MLE deal then maybe it would have worked, but Hayes was looking to get paid. $22.3 million over 4 years is great for him. I'm happy. If we had a good team it would be amazing to match that. We're not...

So are they going to turn into a S&T deal like they did with Artest and Ariza?

If I recall correctly we didn't do a dual S&T. Ariza signed under Yao's injury exception money...

You're right.. it wasn't a real S&T, they just signed to each others teams.. for the same contract.

Kind of sucks to see Hayes go, but thats life I guess. To be honest, Hayes doesn't really fit into the team's outlook/rotation as much anymore. He was a good stop gap at C back when we had Brad Miller as the only other option. But he's the type of player that you have to put next to an offensive player on the other block. So he would be good in Orlando playing next to Howard or in (sadly) Miami playing next to Bosh. And it helps that he can pretty much guard all 5 positions.

I'd rather have the taller player with the shorter contract.

I love Chuck, but am glad we did what was best for the team. Chuck got what he deserved, but just wasn't best for this team. His contract would hamper us in the future, and keep us in mediocrity. At least with Dalembert, we can buy out his contract next year if we so choose. It is also nice to have a legit 7 footer protecting the paint, blocking shots, and, possibly most importantly, altering shots and making people think twice before driving into the paint. Once again, I am very happy for Chuck and am sure he understands that we had to do what was best for us, just like he had to do what was best for him.

Chuck is clearly a better and younger player, yet we signed Dalembert with more money....

We need someone who's actually taller than our coach.

I wouldn't say he's clearly better. They are both defensive players with limited offensive skill. But Hayes is really a PF. He is capable of playing C as he did last year, but with him at C we don't have anyone to protect the rim. Hayes is good at defending the low post in 1 on 1 situations... he's good at helping out on the perimeter. Dalembert is by far the better rim protector. He's certainly not the best, but that kind of defense was what we were missing.

You can have players that can defend adequately 1 on 1 (even Kevin Martin does a solid job on non-superstars), you can have a team that pressures the ball and forces turnovers... you can have a team that knows when and where to rotate (we were top of the league in charges taken pretty much every year with Hayes at C). But that doesn't matter when every team in the league can get into the paint and just shoot over you. If you have someone like Dalembert in the center you can no longer do that.

Hayes is a better player, but what we need is a 7 footer who has the length to keep people from taking easy jumpshots in the paint. To be honest what I would have done is trade Scola for assets to a contending team (like the Celts, Lakers or Spurs) and then signed Hayes for 22M over 4 years. He'll be able to play the 4 far more effectively than a 5, and defensively Hayes and Sam D would be beasting, with Hayes being able to roam around and lock down bigs 1-on-1 and Sam D providing rebs and paint protection. Offensively they can switch, Sam D can hit close/mid-range jumpers and provide spacing while Hayes has 2 really effective post moves.

No... you need a guy that can block shots. He doesn't have to be the best but if you are last in the league in blocking (or close to it), that's a bad thing. And when we're comparing two guys... one guy is a very good individual defender on the low block but the other guy is a solid to above average shot blocker... something we don't have AT ALL. It's a no brainer.

You could replace Hayes with Patterson. PPat isn't as good as Hayes on defense but it's not a huge drop off... he'll still matchup decently with mobile bigs at times when you need a guy to come in and try to stop a star player. On the other hand you can't just throw Thabeet or Hill in and not expect a drastic drop off in paint defense.

It's funny how he conveniently leaves out these guys,

    Russell
    Wilt
    Kareem
    Dream
    Shaq

All MULTIPLE title winners. Notice that they're all strong shot blockers? Sammy D can block shots, Chuck can't. granted I still love Chuck.
