On a 7 hour layover at Amsterdam airport.

I'll be stuck there from 1pm till my flight leaves at 8pm.

Anyone know if I can get in and out of the airport fast enought to do anything?

Kinda don't want to drink myself to sleep while I wait.

Btw, I'm heading back to Barcelona

Should have enough time to ... go to the red light district ... bang a few hoes ... smoke a few bowls.

Should be able to. There are trains to the city like every half hour or 15 minutes.

That's enough time to visit the Van Gogh Museum, which I found pretty cool.

I have layed over in Amsterdam many times. I actually will be laying over in Amsterdam for about 6 hours next week. I've gone into town when I had 11 hours, and the timing worked perfectly but I think 7 hours might be a little bit too short. It's probably possible, but I personally would rather just play it safe and not test my luck. You're gonna be cutting it awfully close. It's a pretty nice airport, though.

Barcelona is, without hyperbole, the greatest city on the face of the planet. I am envious.

Its going to take you like 2 hours to get back in with security checking in and everything you have about 5 hours to do whatever you want, redlight district isnt that far away.

With that amount of time, you should be able to take a train from the airport to the Central Station stop, which is right in the middle of downtown. From central station, it's a 30 min walk to royal palace of amsterdam, which is right by the red light district (another 10 minutes walking). There are other trams that can get you there a little faster, depending on the time/day. Depending on what you want to do/see, there are plenty of coffee shops, Heineken Experience tour, or can go visit one of the museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, or the Anne Frank House) also I remember going to a vodka museum near Van Gogh.

Good luck, dont miss your flight!

Yes. I'm planning on having a layover in Amsterdam too, but I play on sticking around for a night or two. Let me know what you do, brother.

Thanks for the responses. It's not my first time that airport so I know how easy and cool it is. I guess I decide on the fly and if the weather and crowd looks good I'll catch a train into town for a "coffee" and go back.

I'll be there on Monday the 2nd.

Should be plenty of time for you. It's only like a 30-40 min train ride from Schiphol to Centraal Station.

Once in the Damrak near the station, Hill Street Blues and Alibaba for Coffee. Grasshopper is also solid.

And make sure you get a waffle and donor kebab around the corner should you unexpectedly get hungry.

okay... are you willing to do shrooms?

What about a sex show or a prostitute? Come on man this is Amsterdam this is pure f88ucking..

A taxi is not that much more if you are short on time since time is money here. I have taken taxi from schiphol into to town plenty vs, the train and not that bad. The train is fine too but it is kinda a drag. Train is 2nd easiest vs taxi ..so if you are looking to cut costs yes the train is fine. Ive done it a million times too its just obviously a taxi is more convenient and faster

My favorite close to centraal station great atmosphere coffee shop is 'coffeeshop 36' on wormoesstraat.

You walk straight out of centraal station to the left. It's probably the only coffee shop I know of in Amsterdam that actually has views that lay up actually on the canal while still being inside. They play really good techno and I have spent some pretty hardcore moments at this place. I once took 3 hours to meticulously roll the 'best joint ever' speeded out on this exact spot at this coffeeshop 36 looking out on the canal.. nothing like it... finally it all made sense. I tell you. life chapter 8 passed for me on that spot and some pretty good out of body experiences right here http://www.panoramio.com/photo/35006243

The baba head shop like 25 steps from there is where you get the shrooms. I have had the dry ones when they sold them them also sell the refrigerated ones. I dont have time to boil the peyote available but if you have access to a kitchen and 12 hours go for it.. We've had both dry and wet shrooms and I can swear I saw a Houston police car driving down damrak. They have sex enhancers that will give you priopism for the next week. Some of the shroom joints are intriguing.

once you have hit coffeeshop 36 and you hit a head shop for the shrooms its time to check in to your hotel. ( well for Big Mak.. you can skip this part Reeko)
    for flavor stay here:

    www.greenhouse-effect.nl‎

they have themed rooms I like the orange one for obvious reasons. I have stayed here probably 30 times and is all within walking distance of coffeshop 36 and the other head shops I need to know about.

For those not wanting flavor and budget I recommend ibis: http://www.ibishotel.com

they have a really great centraal station location I've stayed at on business.Literally walking distance from centraal station while still safe. They are like motel 6 of europe but I always stay with them when I have to night at Orly. good chain. Of course raddison blu and barbizon are much nicer if you are wanting to throw down. do it you baller. I've even stayed at bobs youth hostel and I can tell you in the end I always end up back at greenhouse effect.

Remember if you are wasted getting back to your hotel can be a challenge in amsterdam. Being near centraal station and the entrance to red light district via the lights of the grasshopper.. then you are golden. Amsterdam is confusing otherwise and I challenge you to learn those canals under the influence. Greenhouse effect hotel is just a great place.

At that point you have your place set .. from there walk through the red light district.. usually it's suck and f&&ck 250 guilders or 100 euros or whatever coin monopoly money they are running at that moment.

right next to the bulldog on Oudezijds Voorburgwal is here:

its basically the windows with the women for sale.

The sex museum on damrak is funny and maybe worth the 30 minutes for a laugh. For another laugh I recommend the sex shows. They are being touted around by dutch versions of elhitman.

They have the whip cream show, banana show ,candle show, the vibrator show, grand finale is usually a couple having sex live on stage. Crowd interaction. usually comedy gold especially under the influence of a cocktail of x, 'smart drugs' that make you dumb, teas, shrooms, and every kind of sativa indica and bio smoke you can shake an el paso stick at.

I like to keep walking and again incorporate the canals and chilling. After all Amsterdam is about canals and chilling smoking weed and soaking it in baked out of your gourd.. so keep walking and go to the bushdoctor in thorbeckplein.

    http://www.thebushdocter.com

A bike rental from coffeeshop 36 to the bushdoctor would be fun.

the bushdoctor is my other favorite coffeeshop in amsterdam and has nice upstairs area where you can see the people on the bikes and the canal and not worry about people bothering or giving you the tough dutch stare. If you are way in the red light district there are weirdos bothering you and you have to pick you spots. There are plenty of cats walking up offering 'xstacy xstacy, cocaine, cocaine, trippys, trippys, xstacy xstacy, cocaine, cocaine, trippys, trippys' Dont buy street coke or heroin since everything else they have available is more than enough fun. unless your name is river phoenix well then have at it gov 'na

So at that point you may have an hour or 2 and your choices are riksmjuseum also known as the yawns museum (unless you are into dutchmasters and I am a little but ..) I prefer van gogh museum, or anne frank house,or heineken brewery)

Van gogh is nice and this is my personal favorite there:

near van gogh museum I do like that museumsplein area for walking around its is nice and of couse vondelpark. Usually a lot less scary then the red light district.

I think the heineken is over commercialized and felt like I was in USA. Sure you can drink beer and they have presentations on flat screen that light up but f&cking no thanks. dont do it.

The hash and hemp mar1juana museum is not that great so don't waste your time.

I have had some good salmon a few times in amterdam there but generally the stand up gyro places as mentioned can be a real treat. Amsterdam is not going to knock your socks off for dinner so save that for the canal dinner cruise. There are a few dance clubs but that's only if you are single... they have lists but that can be overcome. You bring 2 dutch blondes on each arm and the doors open. Just like anywhere else its about throwing down if you need to.

The canal boat rides can be fun if you keep it short. They even have ones that incorporate dinner. You should look at that Mak. In fact Mak you should REALLY do this. very neat.. they are mostly stationed in front of centraal station on damrak or you can prepay:

    http://www.amsterdamsightseeing.net/?event=offer.detail&offerId=11163

A day trip from amsterdam to the countryside for more canals, windmills is 8 hours usually and about $60 but that's with other people in a 'tour' setting'

Maybe worth it one day if you are doing amsterdam for more than 2 days.

They have a casino at schipol airport and I swear it was rigged. I mean I lost every single hand like every single time. Dont do it. save the casinos for vegas and isle of capri.

Do not stay in Amsterdam longer than 72 hours at any given moment !!
