I remember the Rockets, after JVG's tenure, still remaining one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. I think Rafer Alston said that even though JVG wasn't there any more, in games it was as if his words were still drilling into their heads about defensive rotations and locking down their opponent. I was wondering if the same thing will happen now, that guys like Martin, Budinger, Scola, Lowry still have the Adelman's motion offense built into their games but mixed with whatever McHale preaches now.
if anything should remain, it's the offense. Adelman's offense is amazing to watch when the players get it right. And to an extent, its almost unstoppable.
I mean, much of JVG's defense remained during our first year with Adelman. It kind of slowly faded away, but I blame that on the change in roster. After all, Adelman has coached good defensive teams before.
JVG's influence remained because players could not adjust. Adelman tried having players play his way(remember Yao at high post?) but they couldn't adjust. It wasn't that Adelman didn't try. How much of Adelman's scheme remains depends on how well the players can adjust to the new scheme.
