Most NBA teams go through a rebuilding process, why is Les Alexander so against this?

Come on Les stop being a b***h and let this team tank.

Its a short season and your fans will thank you when we get Blake Griffin #2.

Don't you want Blake Griffin #2 Les?

Lowry to DRUMMOND for the alley-oop!

I think this is a year were we really exhausted all of our options, Les should be ready to tank.

I personally am against tanking, but considering the roster, season schedule, and trades we did, there is no way we shouldn't be throwing in the towel.

uh...well...you can narrow this to only the top pick if you need to to make your point, but can't we just say the latest-drafted high pick. That would be Dirk Nowitzki, followed by Kobe Bryant (twice), then Paul Pierce...then Duncan...then Dwayne Wade. Basically, EVERY SINGLE championship for the last 30 years except for the recent Detroit team...and Malone's Fo-Fo-Fo team.

Thumb up. Truly, getting another Yao, Lebron or Hasheem aren't going to help us win the championship.

Look at it the other way around,

How many championship teams since 1980 got their best player from a trade or free agency versus the draft?

    Detroit 2004
    Shaq's 3
    Malone's fo-fo-fo Philly team

That's only 5 titles in 31 years where the best player on the team was not drafted by the team.

I will wonder if a good team makes a good player or a good player make a good team.

    You are kidding, right?

    let's see,

The Lakers were treading water as a mediocre team like the Rockets before Magic got there
The Celtics sucked before Bird got there
The Pistons sucked before Isiah got there
The Bulls sucked before Jordan got there
The Rockets sucked before Hakeem got there

    should I go on?

Yeah this is one of the most frustrating things about Les. I don't see how we have any choice now but to rebuild. Les would be hurting the team long-term by resisting an agressive rebuilding effort. The sad thing is that we have some great young complimentary pieces and if we can just turn some of our veteran talent into good draft picks (and hopefully a young franchise player), we may have a pathway forward. But pinning all of our hopes on Morey's ability to play Jedi mind-tricks on the league and come away with a franchise altering player through trade reallly smacks of desperation. Even if Morey can pull off a trade for a player like Paul or Howard, or Dwill, it's far from certain that any of those players would sign long-term with Houston. Where is the incentive for franchise players to sign here? We are at least 2 allstars away from being a real contender and the city of Houston is not exactly #1 on most people's lists of cities to live in (I say that as a proud Houstonian). Lets get what we can for Scola and Martin, and come away from this year's draft as a franchise heading in the right direction.

Good point. We need to rebuild via the draft. Mediocre teams with records like ours are fine if the players are young and have upside. Mediocrity is not acceptable for a team where your best players are veterans who won't see better days.

Actually, your memory of the facts are incorrect:

Kobe was the 13th pick (acquired via trade).
    Dirk was the 9th pick.
    Pierce was the 10th pick.

D-Wade, a 5th pick, was the only "high pick" among those you listed.

Guess who the other "high pick" to have won a championship with the team that drafted him is?

Darko Milicic on the recent Detroit team. He was also acquired via a trade from years before the draft (one of those deals where the lotto protection eventually fell off).

Sorry HP but how relevant is this statistic? The NBA has been dominated by a few star players which is why you're seeing the best players not being drafted by their own team. For example, MJ, KG, Hakeem, Kobe, Duncan and Shaq own almost all the rings the past 30 years or so. That's only 6 guys versus 30 years of 30 teams drafting players which didn't win a ring. What's you've got to do first is to compare the success rates of teams who tanked and won a ring versus all the other teams who tanked and DIDN'T win a ring.

That's like saying just because some 6 dudes escaped poverty and became millionaire by winning the lottery, then winning the lottery is a viable way to success.

    Carl Herrera,

Your criteria for proving a point is not better than mine.

And ... it doesn't matter Carl, they are ALL higher picks than we've had (and used) since the year Francis and Rice got injured.

I can't remember the last time when I have thought you were wrong. But ... this time ...

The whole point was to illustrate the fallacy of Carl Herrera stating the irrelevant stat that #1 picks haven't one a title since Duncan.

    That's all.

There is no silver bullet formula. Trying to say there is is silly.

The rockets did not have a pick higher than 13th after the draft of Yao. We would be much better team if we are going to have a 9 or 10th pick this year. What is a point to make the playoff in this year? Les is too much caring money every year without thinking a long term plan. We are not going to win a NBA title without a good draft pick, superstars are not going to come here like LA, Boston, even Dallas. Get real, Les.

We didn't use it. We traded it. That's the whole point. We thought trading for a vet was a better plan than using the pick.
