Here's a very good recent interview, from YangYi:

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2002-11-25/1026355527.shtml

    "skeleton" translation, enjoy:

Ask: You've said that you prepare to devote this whole season to adjust to NBA. Now you are playing like a star. Does this suprise you?
Answer: Yes. I've said that to take pressure off myself. I've suprised myself with the recent breakthrough. But there are 71 games left. Even now, I can't really say i've acclimated to the NBA. I just hope people won't bad-mouth me too much when I struggle in some games, and won't praise me too much when I have good games. I will have my share of bad games.

YY: But now you can enjoy the games, right?
YM: Yes. That's an attitude thing. The right attitude can also frustrate your opponent. I enjoyed it. Bradley could be seen nowhere after the game, he left quickly. haywood said he wanted to take it to me, but he and Brown got 2 points each. I win. The victories motivates you.

YY: Does the enjoyment of game really replace the pressure now?
YM: The pressure is there all the time. But I take pride in dealing with it. The first game was suffocating to me. Later, I kind of know when will Rudy let me on the court. My hands were shaking the first couple times he let me on the court. Everytime when I walk out of the tunnel for the home game, I can feel the blood flush. I started last game, to walk out of the light and hear the cheer of the audience, it's electrifying. But I handled it. I was 0 pts, 2 rb in the first game, it can only get better.

YY: Do you think about playing in the all star game? I mean, if all Chinese fans vote for you, you can be starting for the west.
YM: Yes, I know, if every Chinese fan votes for me, I will be there even if I average 0 point per game. But I would rather not go if I am there that way. Now, I'm playing OK. To tell you the truth, I'd rather not play in All-star game in the first year. It complicates the situation and relationships in your team. I know O'neal, Iverson, Dunken went all-star in their first year, but I don't set the bar for myself too high that way, I will be content if I can be at the all rookie game.

YY: You've seen hakeem and Sabonis, who do you most want to meet the next 5 games?
YM: James of Seattle. You saw how he "insulted" me the last time. This time, he should be waiting for my turn.

I was thinking the same thing. I dig his mindset; he's intelligent, genuine, and not too full of himself like so many pro players. Dude is refreshing....

stroker, you sum up it up nicely. Hakeem's old motto also aptly describes Yao's philosophy: "Stay humble; stay hungry."

I too would like elaboration on James' insult. Is it just because James outplayed him? What?

i completly agree, he is so humble, the only problem is that alot of people see it as no selfconfidence.but he is confident and he is verry respectful for athoer players

The word isn't really "insult"; it's more like... "bully", "abused".

IE, Yao wants to play James, because "you saw how he abused me last time!" Again, I think it's Yao being humble and honest when he's been beaten... and yet, ready to compete and redeem himself.

I love this kid! He is mature beyond his years. He has not only the makings of great player but a great team leader. I am very very impressed with him as a person. What a wonderful ambassador for China. (I am not Chinese)
