Things will hopefully get better as long as the rocks continue to win and Yao develops. I read it was a sellout.

Tonight's debacle is an example of why alot of people in Houston do not pay to watch the Rockets.

Re : the Oilers and the Browns.

As far as I know, the Browns owner didn't flirt with every other city that became a topic of expansion. Just about everytime a city seemed to be interested in a football team, Bud Adams was there in his ****ty toupee, then running back to Houston trying to twist the arms of the people to improve the Astrodome.

People got tired of this, and finally said, "**** off."

So he left. It was a bit of a difference when the Cleveland team left.

BTW, Modell let Cleveland keep the Brown's history, but he also stole the history of the Baltimore Colts as his own.

I do not want to get kicked out so i will bring out the browns and oilers one last time. I realize it is a basketball site and not a football site.

I lived in cleveland through that so I am a bit familiar w/ it. My old name in this BBS was Rocketincleveland for those who have been around long enough.

Modell did not "let " anyone keep anything, he lost in court. he wanted to keep the Browns name.

As far as who hates which football owner more is concerned, modell does not travell to cleveland when the ravens are playing the browns because he says he has had threats against his life.

I am not saying that is a good think, actually it is pretty dumb to like a team that much, almost as dumb as insulting people when u disagree w/ their point of view. However, that shows how hated he is.

And I find that I have always agreed w/ TheFreak.....

    Bravo back at YA

Like basketball organizations are so damn loyal. They w**** out their services to anyone who'll pay those outragous prices. As far as I'm concerned, unless a team is a CONTENDER, they don't deserve a packed arena. If you really want to know why arenas don't get packed, look no further than the prce of admission.

    The answer:

Lazy fairweather fans who would rather watch the Rockets or any other Houston sports team in their air conditioned tract homes rather than driving 30 minutes to see a ball game in person.

Houston has never and will never have a strong, loyal, die hard fanbase who show support through highs and lows. Citizens are too ficle and will only jump on the bandwagon when they see their neighbor do it.

Its just the nature of the city.

Houston is just fair weathered. It's not surprising that the two American cities known to be fair weathered (Houston and Atlanta) both occupy the last two spots in attendance so far.

I have no idea why, I never did, even all the years I spent there. The only thing I could think of is the traffic maybe.

Still, that's not a good reason. That's why I conclude (as most people around the country do) that Houston and Atlanta are fair weather towns.

Maybe it's the lack of tradition.

Alright fans are fairweathered here, BUT they have alot of professional teams. We dont just have the Rockets. We have football, 2 basketball teams, the aeros in hockey, indoor football. etc etc.
Houston is a laid back city, maybe too laid back...even to make it to ball games. one of those...i will go to a game things...but u wait and wait and turns out too late to go to one.

Like I said before. Then, Houston should never brag that they are the
4th largest city in the U.S.

Because what they are really saying is that they have the largest city
in the U.S. that can't sell out because they have so many sport teams.

It's a double standard excuse that New York or Chicago can't use. But
some how Houston is exempt from this? I think not.

Let's see....that would give Houston the larges number of fair-weather fans
since we are the 4th largest city in the U.S., right?

Thank God for the Texans! They are new. People will come.

Things will get better, just lowly right now. I wish more people will make it to games, I would if I could but i am not in Houston.
The rocks have to prove they are a playoff team again to the fans. For the people who wont go otherwise.

I'm still trying to figure out why "Reputation of Sports Fans" is even remotely important to a city's reputation.

Hell I live in Houston because its cheap, there are tons of things to do, and I get paid way over scale. I could give a rats ass about how many people attend the games. Yeah it makes the games more fun and may pump up the players but it has zero influence on whether or not I live here.

I have gone to the games since the 80s because I like basketball, and most of all the Rockets. I didnt enjoy last year because it was BORING. . I went to a handful of games because the tickets were free but I wouldnt have paid for that product. Iso SUCKED. Hell I quit watching them on television, and that was the first time I'd done that since I moved to Nashville for college. They were unwatchable. And since they kept raising ticket prices on a crappy product, I was disgusted.

I will be going to games this season (already bought some tickets as stocking stuffers for the wife) because they are playing decent basketball again. I dont go to games to try to build some sort of "city sports reputation." I think Cubs fans are idiots because they mindlessly sell out games for a sub-par product. The owner has no reason to improve it. I think our attendance last season spoke wonders. Rudy feels the pressure. He lucked out getting Yao, and therefore he can make the product better.

Gotta love the power of the dollar. And a 7'6" Center from China.

attendance each season is much more a function of how the team performed the season before rather than the current season. the push for season ticket sales (the base of attendance) is carried on through the offseason...when the team sucks the year before...or doesn't offer a very compelling product...then interest is lower. Combine that with the ridiculously high prices for NBA seats, and there's your answer.

Right, that's why Memphis which is worse then Houston every year and has one tenth the population can sell more tickets then Houston.

By the way, I hear the Texans aren't exactly playing in front of packed houses at home.

You guys should just stop making excuses. There is no excuse. Houston is just not a big league sports city.

Every game has been sold out. No games have been blacked out.
Don't tell me, you must be a sore loser Giants fan.

I think he just means that there are alot of empty seats. They have "sold out" every game, but as a Texans season ticket holder, I can tell you that there are genereally empty seats everywhere.
