I think Charles is just saying these things to create controversy and keep the ratings high. Another poster on a different thread talked about how the producer made him slam Chris Simms on a radio show just to make the show interesting. Judging from all the publicity that the ass kissing generated for Barkley and TNT last week, he may just be trying to repeat his formula for "success".
I heard Charles say that... but he kind of shutup as he was about to finish the statement or after Kenny warned him to shutup while he was ahead... and just before that he did try to say Yao was good and he knew he would eventually be a player and Kenny said he knew he would be okay because he remembered how kevin Garnett struggled in his rookie year but he stilll scored 19 points in one game and then Barklyey laughed saying Garnett one of the top five best players in the game and Kenny said Yao would be that and then Barkley said if Yao ming becomes one of the top 5 players in the game he would do more than kiss Kenny's ass... and Kenny laughed as if to say don't go there unless you want to kiss another ass... I think Barkley is kind of embarrassed by the whole thing and knows after the Dallas game there's no denying Yao is the best rookie in the draft and maybe a star...
Charles is a character, and he doesn't mind being the antagonist. What about the theory that he's just motivating Yao so that he will excel to spite Barkley? He never seemed like that much of an ******* before, so it's probably all in good humor one way or another.
It was at the end of the double header on Thursday (The Sonices and Blazers game i think.) It didn't sound like Barkley was being mean or anything, it was more like he was joking around.
Charles is going to be getting into deeper **** when Yao does become one of the top 5 players in the world! But it ain't going to happen for a while.....
It's one thing to say a guy won't score 19, and another to say he won't be a top 5 player. For example Shaq Kobe Duncan Kidd McGrady Yao would have to be better than at least one of these guys. And there are others like KG who could argue for a place on that list. It's not really a big criticism to say a guy won't be a top 5 player. I think Yao has a chance, but only time will tell.

Kidd is not in the top five players. not even close to it! kidd is just a little above average. the reason why the NETS are doing good is cause they have team chemistry amongst the starting five.
Hmmm... how do you prove that Yao Ming is one of the 5 best players in the world? I guess make the first team All-NBA kind of like he did in the WBC. But that would be especially hard and not entirely reflective because it is based on position. That means he would have to beat out Shaq (or maybe Duncan) to make the team even if he might be better than one of the other players (T-Mac, Kobe, Kidd) on the team. That just seems incredulous in the next few years, but what the heck do i know?
