    Brendan Haywood?
Numbers are worth far more than words:

    $7,624,500 ; $8,349,000 ; $9,073,500 ; $9,798,000 ; $10,522,500 (T.O.)

    Todays column had this:

    8. J.R. Smith (trapped in China)

    Team: Houston
    Price: Three years, $16 million
    Verdict: Properly paid

Notes: I'm predicting a sign-and-trade here for Terrence Williams and Jordan Hill (two expiring deals). Oh, you don't think I can make up sign-and-trades in a hypothetical column? Think again. Semi-related: I still think Smith will have one — repeat: ONE — meaningful moment for a playoff contender before everything's said and done.

I guess no one realizes that Daryl Morey and Bill Simmons are pals, and thus Simmons is probably having fun with him?

Simmons is a hack and so are many other ESPN writers. Stories like Heat will win the Championship last year. Carmelo to insert every team on list is a done deal according to sources. Then the ever present Lakers/Knicks superstar going there permanent article everyday.

You do realize Simmons predicted that the Heat would NOT win the championship last year?

I'd rather send Jonny Flynn, T-Will and Jordan Hill to the Clippers for Chris Kaman.

Kaman makes $12M but is a free agent at the end of the season. If he plays well, the Rockets get a mobile center who can defend and score far better than Nene or Haywood. If he doesn't, the Rocks have $12M to chase a quality center like Dwight Howard.

On the other hand, the Clips get three former first rounders who play PG, SG and PF-C. If one or more excells, the Clips are improved with a smaller payroll, assuming they keep D'Andre Jordan. If not, the Clips can refuse to pick up their options and still have the same money for a FA that they will have when Kaman becomes an unrestricted FA.

FYI, the 4th year options on all 2009 draft picks must be picked up at the start of the year, so there is no "wait and see" with the prospects. Normally you have to pickup the option on Oct 31st, about 5 days after opening night; so I'd expect the options would have to be exercised by Dec 31st this year. With that being said, I'm probably irrationally high on all the 2009 guys; you bet on talent for as long as you can, and Chris Kaman is just not a good player that contributes to winning teams, so I'd much rather roll the ball out and see if any of them can play this year than throw them away for a rental center that is who he his.

The last two columns read like an offseason preview he's stretching into serialized parts. He's done tremendous things with them when he takes his time and gets a consistent theme in previous years: look at 2009's "Almost Famous" recap, where he broke the Artest Underwear Bus story, and there's a ton of other interesting right and wrong things; but it's punchy.

Now, this series has begun to feel a bit forced and very under-researched; for a guy who's written a weekly Friday column and picked NFL lines to go to churning out 2 weeks of daily content is like asking Kobe to average 37 ppg again and play 40 minutes a night; it's not a winning strategy, and there are going to be some really ugly stretches.

Bill has to realize that he's not 28-year old, in his prime Simmons who can churn out 3 columns a week on Page 2 of ESPN, he's a man, he's 40 and he's got to adapt his game; pick his spots, rely on his other highly paid Grantland writers to contribute more, and dominate in short bursts. Otherwise, if he runs this column daily until Christmas Eve, I have a feeling he's going to miss much more than he hits; something like 6-24, yet he'll be given a disproportionate amount of credit.

I can't really blame him, considering the Rockets were only on TV 3 times last year, but the mere fact that he doesn't even know who Courtney Lee is, and how competent of a back-up he is obviously blows his JR Smith S&T completely out of the water; there just aren't the minutes available for an MLE deal to make sense.

Nice analysis. It's like anything else though. Grantland signed him to the max, brought him in to fill seats, and the guy is forcing it to try and hit his numbers. He's stretched too thin, but maybe everyone will figure that out and bring down his minutes without costing any wins.

If we could figure out how to calculate the PER of a sports writer, we could rule the Internets!

I wouldn't trade a coke and a smile for Haywood and his contract.

Day 4 of Bill Simmons' "How much can I piss off Rockets Fans" NBA preview has a few gems for us today; now with Simmons claiming sources...

This I agree with; though I would strongly assume Lowry would be the B-piece. However, he then proposes a trade for Dallas to get Chris Paul:

Which basically implies that the package of Roddy Beaubois, Corey Brewer, Jason Kidd (certain to be bought out), and $3M is somehow superior to Martin, Patterson, Williams, Thabeet, Flynn and 2 #1s to the point of not even needing to pick up Okafor's contract...

Bill, you're doing this on purpose, right? Because the rest of the column is on point; but the way you treat Pat Patterson like a used condom in terms of trade value must be intentional...

You pretty much nailed it, HI Mana. Simmons is very funny and great writer in many ways, but his last two mentions of the Rockets have been clueless.

He didn't mention Lowry, who would be the first piece in any trade for Paul. He rules out the Rockets, but keeps in Cuban and the Mavericks. And the rebuilding Hornets wouldn't take Lowry, a bargain value on his contract and a year+ younger than Paul, but would be interested in Jason Kidd (just for Beaubois, Brewer and $3M).

Makes. No. Sense. I agree Rockets are not the frontrunner here, but the logic is terrible. In fairness, the guy probably has a lot on his plate and researching the Houston Rockets probably is low on the priority list.
