Isn't it fun to have a reason for real optimism? To feel your team on the brink of perhaps becoming "special?" Isn't it fun to have the guy everyone is talking about playing for YOUR team? Isn't it fun to watch Yao's development so far??? Isn't it fun to see how Francis has improved his game? The guy is playing fantastic basketball right now? Isn't it fun to have such a great guy to root for? Isn't it fun to be a Rockets' fan right now!!?? When the bandwagoners haven't totally jumped on just yet...but you know they will soon enough??
The Mavs game was pretty exciting, us rising stars coming in trying to defeat the Mavs 11 game streak.. we looked great, just that Mavs came over us a lil stronger. We can kill them next time they run in houston though. Rockets pride maan !
Isn't it fun to just love basketball...no matter what. Isn't it fun to find any improvement or evolution...no matter how small. Isn't it fun to love watching the Rockets every year and not just because we have Yao and an improved Francis. Is it really so miserable when we lose. Remember, 30 losses is a lot of freaking losses for poor poor football fans who cry after every loss and need something to blame to give them a feeling of regaining control as a fan, yet 30 losses in the NBA makes you a 52 win team. NBA Action, Fantastic BBS Action, Fanspastic
come on...i'm as devoted to the rockets as they come...i watch whether they win or lose...but to argue that it's as fun when we lose as it is when we win is ridiculous. to argue that it's as fun when we have guys who don't belong in an nba starting lineup on the floor night in and night out as it is when we have an exciting core of young players is silly...ultimately sports is nothing more than entertainment...it's not real entertaining to watch a team lose 55 games...it's not real entertaining to watch a team get older and watch their skills diminish...
Even though we lost last night, I had a great time watching that game. The Rockets are young and exciting. Yes, this is fun.
OK, i'm just lying then MadMax. And when people send me emails about the love of the sport, and loving to watch the improvement in even losing teams, they are lying too. remember MadMax, some people consider bball the best sport on the planet, have watched and played it all their lives, don't really consider any other sport comparable, and have loved even losing teams. As I've said many times before, I guess it is the Rice Owls fan in me that will be a season ticket holder with losing teams, just as long as I'm watching basketball "live" at the game. There is nothing like watching it live. The thrill of just entering the arena. Watching Gary Payton pick us apart. It is thrilling...all of it. Understand, I'm from a small town whose city council votes on the high school coach. Basketball is not just a sport...it is a season...like football for small towns here. You have Spring, Summer, Fall and Basketball. You see, good basketball generally always happens...whether it's your team or the opponent. Teams, no matter how bad,,,will face challenges and hurdles every game. The only teams that never reach their reasonable goals are the teams that don't try...because they don't love the game. As long as the players are playing for the love of the game, they will succeed at something. So far, the Rockets are giving me that, and always have, and I credit this incredibly stable franchise passing that torch of always playing like a winner...even if you are a loser. Play with fun, and make the other team work. Give me that, and I will find something to enjoy and talk about e.v.e.r.y game. Many don't need a superstar, respect from ESPN, or dreamcasting diversions to keep interest in the game. It is truly a love of the game matched with finding a team to love. Learn to love the game of basketball, even if you lose. Learn to be a Rice Owls fan!! LOL!
fair enough...but i won't pretend that it's as fun FOR ME when they lose as it is when they win...or when there seems to be very little hope as opposed to having a core of young exciting players who seem to be rising together. i went to baylor...it was a lot more fun for me to watch baylor bears football in the early 90s when they were really competitive than it is now when losses are almost a foregone conclusion. doesn't mean i don't love 'em...doesn't mean i stop rooting for them...but it's not near as fun.
Rice is a fun little school and being there when Hakeem was at UH and then the Rockets is why I'm a Rockets fan t'day. It's also why I'm leery to this day of Karl Malone, if you know anything about Rice Basketball.
What I'm saying is Basketball, LIVE at the arena is always great to watch. The opponents give the same quality of play every year. Your team doesn't, but the game always delivers. This was fun last year, and this year. I view winning more as a reward. Something to cherish and savior, and make it richer. It does not define the fun, though. If that stadium was jam packed with screaming fans like a HS game, or even a Rice Owls bball game against Houston (with no chance of winning), the fun would still be there. I could take my wife, who doesn't care about wins or losses, and she would have equal fun...as long as the Fans are ALL there and into the game. It is the fans that amplify the fun...the game always has it. As a player playing for thrills and pride and just getting the better of my man and learning to dance with my partners, I can tell you that--win or loss--I always enjoyed every freaking minute out there. <b>Winning is a reward; it doesn't define fun!</b>
<blockquote><hr>Originally posted by dwmyers It's also why I'm leery to this day of Karl Malone, if you know anything about Rice Basketball. <hr></blockquote> David Reimer (sp?) Are you Isabel's husband by chance? I was in the Army at the time of the Tech game so I heard about it later.
"<i>Winning is a reward; it doesn't define fun.</i>" Actually, it's pretty ironic that Yao Ming actually has a quote today to illustrate the above heypeeism.. <blockquote><hr>"You have to understand, I play the game in two parts," <b>Yao said</b>. "One part is the enjoyment of playing. The other part is, of course, winning. Today, I achieved half of that." <hr></blockquote>Explaing my previous posts above in Yao's words: I love the game in two parts. One part is the enjoyment of watching NBA Action live. The other part is, of course, winning. Every game, I get at least half of that.
Isn't it fun when you're watching the game at the house to spend more time on your feet than on the couch?
right...yao is making my point! it's MORE fun when both sides come together! it's more fun to win than it is to lose! yes..there is the enjoyment of the game itself...but when your team is good and you feel like you've got a good shot at the playoffs...or you're actually watching your team advance with crucial last second shots or big plays down the stretch...that is more fun than watching your team get blown out by 30. i'm not saying basketball is no fun when your team loses...just saying it's more fun when you're winning and there's real reason for optimism.
MadMax, Yao said he enjoys just playing. He also wants the reward for winning. Your point seems to be you don't enjoy just watching, that you need the reward or else it isn't fun. That is not what Yao is saying. Have you ever gone to a game with someone who doesn't care about wins or losses, gone to any sport. Like maybe your first World Cup Soccer match, or something. The game is fun merely by being into the game. The more fans into the game the better. And in many arenas in many cities and small towns, wins don't really matter when it comes to all the fans being into the game. Do you understand?
MadMax, I really enjoyed your positive post. Too bad this thread was ruined by some smartass who also wanted to say something .
SJC, Like MadMax needs you to pat him on the back. Don't be so transparent. MadMax, Do you really consider me to be a smartass here. I love this topic. If so, i apologize, that was not my intent. My point is that it doesn't really make me positive about fans to read that their fun meter is directly tied to wins, because no matter how many wins, it will take a championship to fully end the griping, and we will forever be stuck with a chorus of disappointment, blame, and yelling, just at different levels of achieving goals. Look at the UT fans in the Hangout. Consider how many people here say, "Just give them time. If we aren't contenders in 3 yrs, then it is time to gripe." Really...man, that sounds like spoiled fans demanding championships to me. I know you were adding positivism into a dreary forum today...it's not like you have to remind us why the BBS is blowing up with more threads and registered members...everyone is positive about the future. This topic just seems deeper to me that saying..."Hey, I'm positive...I enjoy WINNING. I'm not complaing." Your take just reads that the game is not enough...WE NEED WINS!!!...and ripe for continued negativism in regards to fan spirit and enjoyment. From my seats, your thread actually explains in a bachwards way why so much griping and blame occurs even after we see the best Motion Offense (for one sustained stretch) this city has ever witnessed...but the better team adjusted and still won. imo, the healthy approach to "Isn't This Fun" is this thread by CBrownFanClub <a href="http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11413&highlight=time">Good Time To Be A Rocket Fan (No Kidding)</a> That was his 10th post when we were 2-10 and people were crying to trade Barkley or Dream, NOW!
