Yao's last season in the CBA, he averaged 32 pts, 19 boards on 72% FG shooting for the whole season. Based on last nights performance in just 33 minutes, and frankly, how easy he made it look, I'm thinking that in the not-too-distant future, we will see the same numbers from Yao for an NBA season.

What I like so much about this is that it proves all the bashers and doubters wrong. People who called him a stiff and a bust two games into the season, people who said the Rockets wasted their pick. This 22 year-old kid, in his 10th NBA game, is already showing more all-around skill than Olajuwon had after 4 seasons.

My question is, do you think he will reach that milestone this year, next year, or when? I'm thinking that by his third year in the league, he will be averaging 30+ pts, 16+ rebounds, 3+ blocks a game. It will probably take that long for Mobley and Francis to figure out that Yao should be the first option in the offense.

He may never approach those CBA numbers. He is getting a lot of his points because teams have been focusing on Cat and Francis, that will change.

I think he will be a 25pt 15rb player....and shoot about 60%.....that would be good enough for me.

    :)

What's killing me is his shooting accuracy. I agree that teams will start focusing on him more, but he can shoot over just about anyone. More times than not, when he gets fouled going to the hoop, he finishes. On top of that, he's got a sweet touch from the FT line. Fouling him is like giving up two points. And trying to prevent him from getting a shot off is going to be next to impossible for 90% of NBA centers.

I say he's definitely going to be a 30+ guy. It's only a matter of when the offense starts running through him as the first option. He will consistently be the mismatch on a night-to-night basis.

All-around skills at the offensive end perhaps, but he is light years away from Olajuwon on the defensive end. I am a big Yao fan and in the end I do believe he will be better offesnive player than Hakeem, but after having seen him play I can confidently say that he will never be in the same league as Hakeem defensively. He just doesnt have the lateral movement, the quickness, the cat like reflections and the anticipation of Hakeem when playing defense.. After experience Yao will be solid defensively but not spectacular. On the offensive end, however, he will simply be a monster.

    GAWD !!

I can not believe our luck.....having the Dream for 17 seasons and then getting the next dominant big man.

Rudy must have pockets full of rabbits feet.

PS. It is good to see you back Axeman !!!

I will say it again, besides his size and obvious skills, it is Ming's INTELLIGENCE that sets him apart. PLUS, he is classy, polite, humble, and the consummate team player. I hope these qualities are contagious! Imagine Ming as stronger, better conditioned, and more skilled defensively. Will he become a "dream" come true? One thing is for sure, he is going to become a nightmare for other players. Score on him while you can, it will end soon.

don't forget his sense of humor!! :D

did y'all catch his comments to the Barkley ass-kissing event?

When asked what Charles would kiss if Yao scored more points, Ming said, 'an elephant'!! tee-hee

So True, Rockhead! How could I not mention his sense of humor. He is funny, and will be even funnier when he speaks English! He will make so many fans. I have been one since draft day. I really like him and want him to do well. It is bringing back memories of how I felt about another big tall guy.

Remember what Bum Phillips said about Earl," He may not be in a class by himself, but it doesn't take long to check the roll."

Well, he darn near matched that average last night.

But for a season, I'm not sure.

He's more than welcome to try, however. ;)

I thought he may average about 10 pts & 8 rebs, but I think he could get up to 15 & 10, especially if he's in the starting lineup sonn.

IMHO, I don't know if Yao is necessarily ready to start, but it's getting harder to justify bringing him off the bench.

I agree with Zboy. To even say this is to not understand Olajuwan at all. He averaged 3 blocks a game for his *career*. As a center, he is one of the all time leaders in steals. Olajuwan could win games by running down point guards from behind, blocking their layup, rebounding the block and passing to an open Houston Rocket's guard. He was a whirling dervish on defense.

Olajuwan played a 60 foot game and could run with anyone for the length of the game. Ming has only a fraction of that endurance.

Ming is an exceptionally gifted offensive player, but right now, that is 90% of his worth. Olajuwan was both a defensive stud and talented offensively.

Yao Ming just scores so effortlessly. Of the two shots he missed last night one was blocked by Bradley.

The other miss was after Yao Ming received the ball behind the basket with the shot clock about to expire and he tossed up a prayer.

Yao Ming is just amazing. How is it possible that we are so lucky. Yao Ming will be one of the great offensive weapons of all time before his career is over.

    Elvin Hayes
    Moses Malone
    Ralph Sampson
    Hakeem Olajuwan
    Yao Ming

The greatest history of centers in the History of the NBA!

By the way, Colin Pine continues to NOT impress in his translations.

The question before that one, about Yao Ming's impressions of the kiss/donkey, he actually said:

"As long as Kenny doesn't mind hanging his name around the donkey, I don't mind either."

This, in Mr. Pine's hands, became translated as something like:

"Yao says it's ok with him if they hang up Kenny's picture for Charles to kiss."

!? Team Yao needs to reconsider their choice in translator. Yao is just a witty guy who's going to get a lot of media attention, and having someone in the middle randomly changing around his quotes can NOT serve him well.

Tim, you out there!? Pass it on to the front office!

Pines not gonna be with Yao for long. Yao is gonna be weened off just like Nene Hilario is being weened off his translator. Pine is actually a good choice for Yao because Yao will learn to live as an American and learn the culture from an american.
