Wasn't it just last year that we were the worst defense in the league? Has any team ever gone from worst to first? Edit: Ok, I see we 30th in defense last year. Pretty remarkable to improve that much in one year.
The blame that gets put on Frank Bush isn't totally fair. He didn't have Jonathan Joesph, Daniel Manning, J.J. Watt, Brian Cushing (due to steroids), or Brooks Reed. Just think how awful it would be to create a defense when your best corner is a rookie Kareem Jackson. Frank Bush sucked but the amount of crap he takes isn't always fair. He didn't have the same players. That being said. I love Wade Phillips. Every defense player seems to have so much swagger. When was the last time we saw Kareem get picked on? (New Orleans?) He has looked great these past 5 weeks.
He has been covering much better(which maybe due to competition) and making outstanding tackles in run support, zone and receivers other than the one he's covering. We'll find out this week if it's him or the competition.
It wasn't a pure results - based problem. He was a great LB coach that got promoted beyond his capabilities. The schemes being called, the unbelievable Man-2 instead of prevent against the Jets (as well as, give them the sideline and play the inside hip). The refusal to blitz (until it was clear he was going to get the axe). Constantly leaving Jackson in a mismatch* without help over the top. Not standing up and challenging Kubiak to let him dump losers like Okoye or David Gibbs. *i.e., letting him on the field
Yeah, people do tend to overly pile on Texan players and coaches around here, but Frank Bush is the one guy who actually deserves every bit of it. And then some.
And back to the spirit of this thread: Blaine Gabbert (season) 137 ypg, 48% compl, 62 QBR, 6TD-6INT, 2.8 sacks per game (vs HOU) 117 ypg, 39% compl, 36 QBR, 1TD-3INT, 3.5 sacks per game
Now, there's a hope-presenting argument when it's correctly pointed out that the Texans D has largely done their great damage against lesser offenses. NICE!!
I literally do not care. My only concern is them taking the division and being able to attend a home playoff game for the first time.
We all love Brooks Reed, but can you imagine what a healthy Mario would be doing in this defense? He'd probably have about 15 sacks by now.
Watching a home playoff loss isn't very fun. I'd say the only offense that scares you on the AFC side is New England. I kind of want to see that game happen.
well, juicy, they were doing ok against the 'aints until the offense Kubiaked themselves off the field in the second half.
I hear ya, but I just got off the phone with 1994-2010, and they were wondering if you'd like to come have "fun" with them again this year instead.
Not to be Debbie Downer but the Jags suuuuuk. Why get all happy over that performance? Let's see how they do vs the Falcons. Drew Brees loves our defense ;-)
I totally agree. That will hurt, all the playoff hoopla will be gone in a matter of 3hrs. Ask the Chiefs how much it hurt. It will be worse for us since we've never been before.
