According to a couple of reputable sources on another board, Mackovic could have hired him instead of Bobby Wright. Geez. He could be the head coach right now at UT. Also, according to some Ags, Fran to ATM is pretty serious right now.
Why would he be head coach at UT now? Perhaps the defense would have been so good that UT would have won more games, thus securing Mackovic's future. By being so good, another school (perhaps Oklahoma since they would not be doing as well without Stoops), would have hired him away. After Oklahoma hired him away, they would be doing better, Texas would then have declined and Mackovic would have been forced out, thus necessitating the hiring of a new coach - say someone like Mack Brown?
Yeah, a bit revisionist of me I guess. But, if Stoops were the DC at UT, Dodds wouldn't allow him to talk to OU. I think Mackovic and Stoops would possibly butt heads and a decision would be made by Dodds and or the board? I think Mack would have stayed at UNC if UT had waited another year to fire Mackovic.
GR8-1, I know Bama is on probation, but Franchione has repeatedly said he wants to stick it through. I don't think he leaves Tuscaloosa unless a premier job opens up, and A&M is not that kind of job.
DV, allegedly, Fran hasn't signed the contract at Bama yet. ATM minus probation is better than Bama with probation. I think he'd leave.
Didn't Alabama get their sentence before hiring Dennis? But I still believe, he can get a much better job than A&M, not that its a bad job. I also thought he got a contract extension last year.
I go back and forth on this one as well. I have seen the threads on Fran. There is certainly something fishy about him not signing the extension, but I think that is more in relation to the fact he is waiting to see if there are additional sanctions against the program. There are several reports out there about Bama possibly facing additional charges this time for academic fraud. It seems that there was an arrangemnt in pace by some one affiliated with the university to have some one take the ACT for a recruit. -If additional sanctions come down, expect Fran to not sign the contract. -If the aggy position does not open up this season, he will look to sign the contract and stay there. The rumor that involves the Mizzou AD & Fran coming by next week is not going to happen, and if they do not do it immediately after the season, they will get killed in recruiting. According to the president of the aggy, they have just begun the search for an AD and do not expect to start interviewing and have that person in place until the end of the year. Granted, things can change and may if Texas handles them well next week, but its a long shot at this point.
Can you please give an example of a much better job than A&M, from an objective point of view....it looks like Miami, ND and FSU are all locked up.
Well if Franchione can live out the probation, Bama is better, the A&M job is not bad, but its not a Miami, Florida, Texas, USC, FSU, kinda job. I think its a good job, but not sure if Dennis wants to leave Bama-why did he go there in the first place is my question-if he knew/expected sanctions.
Bama not on probation is a better job, thus the reason I feel he may wait it out. What the aggy have gong for them is that Fran has been open about wanting to return to the state. Other than that, it would depend on what was available at the time, and to suggest that Mia, FSU & ND are the only programs better than the aggy job is a huge stretch. The Florida job could come available in the same time as the aggy one. Which do you feel would be the more sought after position? The A&M job is a good one for the right person, and Fran may be that person, but to think any one in the country would leave their job and go there is not realistic. B/CS is not the place for everyone, and it can be really tough to recruit Texas when you have so many out of state schools to compete with along with UT. b/c Bama on probation is better than TCU not.
Oh, I get you, I think it was more that it was the best available at the time (coming off a great year at TCU), it was still in the south, and I do not think anyone felt there were this many violations.
A&M doesn't have the history of UT, but A&M is still a good job. The last 20 years A&M has been just as good as UT. If you put FSU as a top job because of Bowden then you have to include A&M in that category because of Slocum. If the Aggies hire Franchione or a big name coach, Mack Brown will **** in his pants. Brown arrived at UT when the Aggies were going downhill. He quickly moved UT to # 1 in the state. The next Aggie coach can easily move him aside to make A&M # 1. A&M can recruit alongside UT and OU (anyone who doesn't think so is wearing burnt orange glasses). True UT and OU have better facilities but the players in this state will see Mack Brown is underachieving in Austin and will head to B/CS to play for Franchione. The next Aggie coach will be riding a lot of momentum. It's critical for the Aggies to make a good hire.
I think UT, USC, MIchigan, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio State, UCLA, OU, etc. all are better jobs then ATM. I think it's always better to be the state school rather then the "second" state school Not to slight ATM, that is not my intent. FSU, with Bowden gone, may be a tad below the first tier, imo. But, who knows. I think Notre Dame is the best job overall. UT, USC, etc. fall right below the Irish. Switzer himself said that Texas was the best job in the country. Surely you don't think ATM is one of the top 5 jobs in the country?
A lot of Longhorn fans are laughing at the rumor but who would have thought Mack Brown would leave UNC after a 10 win season? Alabama is a better job than A&M, but the Aggies may pay more, Franchione may want to return to Texas, and Franchione may want to move away from the tarnished reputation of Bama. Don't underestimate Franchione's ability to recruit and win in the Big 12. Look at the potential Big 12 South Coaching Roster: A&M: Franchione OU: Stoops UT: Brown TT: Leach OSU: Miles Baylor: Who cares? Toughest division in the nation.
Brown leaving UNC for Texas would not be a shock at any time. Hell, if John Bunting went 10-1 I would not be shocked to see him at A&M. Both of those Texas schools are an upgrade from UNC. Has and will throw money at Fran at least as much as A&M. What is going to come into play here is timing. The aggy are likely not going to make the change this year. It does not make sense, and they do not have the people ther yet to make the change If it were to happen, no doubt you would be right about that statement!
