Joey Kramer is pretty important - their biggest song starts with his drum beat.

Joel Gion from the Brian Jonestown Massacre didn't seem to do anything except hold a tamborine and mug for the camera in DiG!

The Happy Mondays also had a "dancer" guy, although I read that he also the singer's drug dealer.

Noel Redding was the weak link in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, yet had the arrogance to force his awful songs (She's So Fine, Little Miss Strange) onto the band.

All this being said, most bands don't keep anyone that's truly useless. As long as they can play their instrument live without completely ruining things, they're filling a need. Bands will also keep a guy who can't play worth a crap but have a great image (see Sid Vicious).

Ok, +1 for getting Joel's name right and I'm takin' the 1 right back for not knowing the name of the Monday's vibesman, Bez. Stone Roses had one as well named Cressa.

Absolutely! John Frusciante has proven through his live vocal performances, that Kiedis is indeed surplus. Also his IQ is north of 80, unlie Kiedis.

Not the most useless, but definitely the luckiest is Ringo.

Say what you will about Kiedes, but RHCP would sound entirely different without his vocals.

Not saying it would be better or worse, but there would certainly be a noticeable divide.

Kiedes is not that useless, he is in many ways the face of the band, and from what I understand, keeps the peace among everyone.

I think he's got a great sound vocally, but arguably the worst lyricist ever.
