How Rockets can benefit from a no season (Knicks Pick)

The Knicks get the 6th pick and the Rockets get the 7th. Perfect scenario

 

Charlie P said the other day that if there were no season there would be a 30 team weighted draft lottery like the NHL did in 2004-5.


As a lockout cancelled the games of the 2004–05 NHL season, the draft order was determined by lottery on July 22, 2005. Teams were assigned 1 to 3 balls based on their playoff appearances and first overall draft picks from the past three years. According to the draft order, the selection worked its way up to 30 as usual; then instead of repeating the order as in past years, the draft "snaked" back down to the team with the first pick. Therefore the team with the first pick overall would not pick again until the 60th pick. The team with the 30th pick would also get the 31st pick. The draft was only seven rounds in length, compared to nine rounds in years past. The labor dispute caused the shortened draft.

The Pittsburgh Penguins won the draft lottery and, as expected, selected Sidney Crosby. The lottery associated with the draft has colloquially been referred to as the Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes due to the certainty of Crosby being selected first.

I was thinking the same thing as I read the article. How nice it would be to get two picks ranging from 6-14; oh how nice it would be to hit 6 and 7. Jackpot!

Wouldn't the perfect scenario be the Rockets get the 1st pick and the Knicks get the 6th pick?

 

Did they just call Alexander a hardliner? Is it because Alexander has seemingly nothing at all to do with any of the CBA stuff?

Yes, the Knicks. Though they would not have a great chance at the first overall pick, they would have a shot at a top 10 pick in this scenario.

But here's where the MLE comes back to haunt the Knicks. Isiah's decision to give all of it to Jeffries in 2006 motivated Donnie Walsh to want to move it off the books in 2010 to open up enough salary cap space to target LeBron James in free agency and still have enough room to add more talent around him. So off to the Houston Rockets Jeffries went for Tracy McGrady, along with the 2011 and 2012 first round picks.

Before you put your fist through the computer screen, you should know that Walsh had the sense to make sure the 2012 pick is lottery protected from first overall to No. 5. So if the luck of the draw finds the Knicks in the top five, they will keep the pick (and the Rockets then get the 2013 pick).

Now the Rockets traded their 2012 first round pick to the Nets for Terrence Williams, so it is possible that Houston could be completely shut out of any first round pick. Their pick is protected through the top 14, however. So to be shut out completely, the Knicks pick would have to fall in the top 5 and the Rockets' own pick would have to land at No. 15 and up. Nightmare scenario for GM Daryl Morey and hardlining owner Les Alexander.

 

If we get the 7th wouldn't that mean we didn't make the playoffs? In that case, wouldn't 1st and 6th be the best case?

Well with that in mind, there would hardly be any way we get 6th and 7th. We were the best team to not make the playoffs the last two years. No way they reward that with a middle lotto pick. Knicks on the other hand...

I'm still SMDH over the Terrance Williams trade. Hopefully, his expiring contract proves to be useful but I think this was DM's worst move as our GM. 2012 is going to be a sick draft. I have no idea what he was thinking when he pulled the trigger on that deal.

 

You do know that pick is lottery protected right? Unless the pick is past 14 the nets don't get it.

Yes, the rockets picks could be useless if we have a season, and make into the playoff. The Knicks picks would not be good either because they got enough good players from last year.

 

I would package them and terrence williams for a top 3 pick.:grin:
