I'm trying to figure out :

    1) What are some of the best places to study directing in the US? I've been told the best ones for directing are in New York, is that true?

    2) How much would it cost (total food, accomodation, expenses, etc) to live in New York for a year? One person, studio/small appartment, must have decent access to whichever school.

Any websites that could help would be highly appreciated!!

Op are you asking about film/tv or theatre?
Almost every major university in america has a film dept, its such a broad question to try and peg down your best option.

I certainly wouldn't exclude all options outside nyc though. How much are you able to afford over a year and are you willing to change your career path entirely?

I don't think you will get the best responses here, but I went to a public university in nyc over nyu or expensive universities. Email me through the board if you have more questions...

What I really want to do is direct...

USC, UCLA, NYU and UT have great film departments.

USC and NYU probably top tier.

    UCLA is close.

UT is the best if you are west or east coast.

If you have a roommate, you can get a 2-br/1-bathroom in a nice enough Brooklyn neighborhood (Carroll Gardens, Williamsburgh, etc) for $2,000/month ($1,000 per person).

It would cost you $123K to live in NYC the way you would live in Houston for $50K.

are you looking for TV or Film? If your looking for film and are intent on going to a big name school, go to UT. Its much cheaper than the others overall. As far as getting in the business, its more about who you know than where you went to school. For TV, I went to Sam Houston State and majored in RTF, and the key component in everyone I know getting a job after school has been internships - mostly unpaid. Once in the field, join as a lot of organizations and get involved in the industry. You'll get to know a lot of people in the field faster, therefore you'll move up in the industry quicker. Honestly, noone really cares where I went to school, just if I can do the job. Good Luck.
