Wow. I really thought he was going to come back. Seems like the type that doesn't want to retire when he still has "it."

On the other hand, you can't go out any better than after winning a World Series.

So Pujols told him he wasn't going to resign?

I would think Jose Oquendo would be the likely successor. LaRussa has spent the past several years raving about how Oquendo would make a great manager someday. If John Mozeliak and the rest of the Cardinals front office are serious about wanting to hang on to the rest of the coaching staff (namely Dave Duncan) hiring Oquendo, a guy they have all worked with, might be the way to go.

Great manager. So long, not going to miss you in the central.

He's going back to Oakland. Just so he can follow the Astros to the AL West and continue to screw with our hearts.

Interesting list of candidates to replace him in St. Louis. They include Terry Francona, Jose Oquendo and Ryne Sandberg.

Francona would obviously be the splashiest hire and I don't think you could go wrong with hiring him. The makeup of the Cardinals is similar to the makeup of the Red Sox when they were having their best success. They have their star power, but they also have a lot of scrappers.

I think Oquendo would be a good hire as well. I think many have assumed that he would be given a crack at replacing TLR. Not only does Oquendo look the part of a good manager, he would likely be able to keep Dave Duncan, a huge part of the team's success, on board.

Sandberg is a nice name to put on the list of candidates because he is a household name, but I'm not sure what he would bring to the table that the other two don't.

that sounds about right. he'll sign jim edmonds to teach all A's outfielders how to rob doubles. holy crap, i hate those dudes, but i respect the crap out of them. Go 'stros.

    EDIT.... also: SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman
    could #resdsox and #cubs interview same 6 guys? #sveum, #mackanin, #maddux

I think the Rangers may end up losing Maddux as a pitching coach. Difficult to keep it together after a 2 year WS run.
